Greetings and Salutations! I hope all is well and travel and been safe for you all. I’ve got a state park in northwest Alabama to share with you. I was able to visit Joe Wheeler State Park thanks to a family reunion that was planned for late May/early June. There was plenty to do.
Lodging
There are many different ways to spend your time relaxing and resting at Joe Wheeler State Park. My family of four, along with several other families in our party, stayed at the Resort Lodge. The rooms were clean and spacious. The best part was being able to spend time around the pool deck watching folks out on the lake and catching up with family members. JWSP had many other options for us to stay for the weekend. They have cabins, camping facilities, a group lodge, fisherman’s cabin and lakeside cottages.
Activities on the Water
Naturally, being on the shores of Lake Wheeler, there are plenty of water activities. I brought a pair of Seadoos for everyone in the family to enjoy. Everything was great until one of the Doo’s flipped over and filled with water. That was an expensive fix. Anyway, bring your own watercraft or rent one from the park. There is plenty of room on the lake for skiing, fishing or just cruising.
Activities off the Water
JWSP offers many other activities off the water also. “The General” Golf Course is available for the golf enthusiasts. There are plenty of day use areas and pavilions for picnics and family reunions. There is a disc golf course available along with several hiking/biking trails.

Food and Beverage
There are plenty of options for eating in and around JWSP. Daniella’s Restaurant is the dining area that we used on a couple of occasions while we stayed. The food was excellent and so was the service. Since it was a family reunion, it was mostly pot luck and a small bit of catering that was brought in from outside the park that fed us all. We enjoyed a pre-reunion meal at a local restaurant about a mile from the state park on Friday night.
Website and Miscellaneous
According to their website, tornado damage from 2019 caused some areas to be shut down while funds become available to repair these areas. The rates are very reasonable when it comes to playing golf, renting facilities or lodging at the park. It was about a three and a half hour drive for us from the northwest Georgia/southeast Tennessee area.
Be Blessed and Safe Travels!!!
