John Golf’s “Putting Around the USA”: Tortuga Bros Plan For A Week in Yellowstone

To say that my younger brother and I are fairly excited about our trip beginning in two weeks could be the understatement of the year. We send each other texts about what we have purchased, how we are saving money and other minor things that will add to the enjoyment of our trip. In the last article, I shared our plans for making our way out to Yellowstone National Park. Today I’ll be sharing our plans for a week in and around Cody, Wyoming where our cabin is rented from June 1st though the 8th.

“River Lane Cabin,” 3 bedroom

This is our cabin for a week.

This will be our view overlooking the Yellowstone River. Ok, I’m having a hard time containing my enthusiasm at this point. My heart is racing thinking I’ll be fly-fishing that river soon. This has been a dream of mine after watching the movie, A River Runs Through It.

June 1

This is the day we check into the cabin. We’ll make a stop at a grocery store to get a few items for our week long stay. I believe both of us are hoping we catch enough fish that we won’t need too many groceries. While we remain optimistic with our fishing capabilities, we will prepare for the worst, just in case. Our plans also include us visiting Grand Teton National Park and Teton Village. We hope to get there very early because most of the wildlife can be seen during the early morning hours. We will definitely keep a safe distance. If we end up in a tussle with a bear, I’ll make sure we have video or pictures.

June 2

Day 2 has us exploring for more waterfalls. We will travel to see Undine Falls in Yellowstone National Park. Then we’ll make our way to Lamar and Hayden Valleys. We hope to see more wildlife on this day by visiting these beautiful areas. The other sites for this day will include the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National Park and Yellowstone Lake.

June 3

Day 3 has us visiting some of YNP’s favorite attractions. Our first stop on this day will be a trip to see Old Faithful. Then we’ll take a hike up to an overlook to take in the beauty of Grand Prismatic Spring. The last stop of the day will have us at Norris Geyser Basin. I believe we will have had our fair share of Sulphur smell to last us a very long while.

June 4

We have a guide to take us fly-fishing. We’ll do this for 1/2 the day. Then we’ll go for a hike on some the trails located around our cabin. We will grill out later in the evening and enjoy the evening by listening to the river and enjoying each other’s company.

June 5

Busy day today. This day will start with a 42-mile scenic loop. We’ll stop and hike for a bit and then we’ll get to check out Schwabacher’s Landing. This is an Ansel Adams’ favorite. The rest of our day takes us to a Snake River Overlook, Oxbow Bend and then more hiking at Taggert Lake. I believe we might be a little tired when this day ends.

June 6

This day looks to be quite relaxing and interesting. We will visit Custer Gallatin National Forest. We’ll spend most of the day fly-fishing the Gallatin River near Bozeman.

June 7

This will be our day of rest before we head back to the Chattanooga area. We’ll more than likely rent some ATV’s and go for a ride. We could just walk down to the the river below the cabin and fly-fish a little more.

This reminds me so much of the time we prepared for our trip to the Florida Keys. The only difference is that we are having to prepare for warm and cold temps. We didn’t have to worry about the cold in the Keys. I think we’ll be ok. Not much has been planned for our trip back. I’ll leave that for an article in June. We’ll definitely take a different route home.

Please feel free to share a must-see or must-do in the comments for our road trip back to Tennessee. We love to respond to all comments.

One last note, I can’t take all of the credit for this article. If not for my younger brother making out the itinerary, I’d be winging this trip. I have just taken the itinerary and put it into sentences. Thanks to my younger Tortuga Bro! I can’t wait for you all to see his pictures on this trip.
