Two days ago we intended to put up a story covering the 90th birthday of Mr. John Williams, arguably the most accomplished theatrical music composer in the history of film. We don’t recognize many birthdays around here, but ninety tends to be a number worth noticing… especially when it comes from the archon of a field. Just to give you an idea of Mr. Williams’ portfolio and importance — the man is second in Oscar nominations. Do you know who is number one? Walt Disney himself. When the only person with more trophies than you is Walt Disney, you’ve done something, er, a lot of somethings in your career.

In honor of John Williams’ 90th birthday on February 8th, we’d like to celebrate with our favorite five musical pieces from his cinematic history. Enjoy.

Happy Belated Birthday, John!

When your top five doesn’t include E.T., Harry Potter, or Jaws… you’re quite frankly the greatest of all time.

The master of movie music will be composing for Indiana Jones 5. We wish him the very, very best. Here’s to 100, sir!

It is tough to argue with these. For me, Williams’ finest will always be the finale of Empire.

His use of leitmotifs to sum up not only the loss and confusion felt by Luke and Leia, but also their determination for the future is simply brilliant. No dialogue is necessary.

42 years later, I still am moved by that piece.

Happy belated indeed maestro!
