Jon Bernthal is officially taking the Punisher to the big leagues, appearing in Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Best known for his gritty, unrelenting portrayal of Frank Castle in both Disney+ and Netflix’s Daredevil series and his own Punisher spinoff, Bernthal is now set to reprise the role in the upcoming Marvel-Sony production Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film will bring him further into Marvel’s cinematic universe and marks a major tonal shift for the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films, possibly steering them into darker territory.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brand New Day is slated to begin filming in England this summer and will hit theaters July 31, 2026. While Marvel and Sony have kept plot details tightly under wraps, the inclusion of the Punisher has already lit a fire under fan speculation.

From Street-Level Vengeance to Global Stakes

Bernthal’s Frank Castle is widely considered one of the most faithful and intense portrayals of a Marvel antihero to date. With a combat style rooted in brute force, grit, and an arsenal of firearms, Castle’s street-level vigilantism stands in stark contrast to Peter Parker’s tech-savvy acrobatics. That contrast could set the stage for either a powerful alliance—or a brutal clash.

This is also something of a homecoming for the character himself, as The Punisher’s first appearance in the comics was in Amazing Spider-Man #129.

Bernthal first took up the role in Season 2 of Daredevil before leading two seasons of his own series, both praised for their uncompromising tone and R-rated action. He recently returned in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, and his involvement in Brand New Day signals that Marvel is continuing to bet heavily on the actor and character.

Bernthal will also headline a standalone Punisher project for Disney+, which he is co-writing. Additionally, he’s expected to appear in Born Again Season 2. One reported condition for Bernthal’s return to the role was preserving the Punisher’s darker, violent edge—a creative stance that will be tested within the more PG-13 confines of the Spider-Man franchise.

Cast and Story Clues

Returning alongside Tom Holland are Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, reprising their roles as MJ and Ned. However, the size of their roles has yet to be revealed. Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) has also joined the cast in a mystery role, adding another layer of intrigue to the ensemble.

While much of the plot remains hidden, the film will take place after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker’s identity was wiped from the world’s memory. Rumors have pointed to a rogue’s gallery of villains possibly appearing—including organized crime figures and even multiple Hulk variants (which means Mark Ruffalo will appear)—but none have been confirmed by Marvel.

A Long Time Coming for Bernthal and Holland

There’s some poetic symmetry to Bernthal and Holland reuniting in Brand New Day. The two actors worked together on the 2017 medieval thriller Pilgrimage while preparing to audition for their Marvel roles.

At the time, they reportedly helped each other with their tapes. Eight years later, their characters will now share the screen.

A Grittier Spider-Man on the Horizon?

Whether Castle serves as an ally, a rival, or a wildcard presence in Brand New Day, his inclusion marks a clear tonal shift from the lighthearted vibe of earlier entries in the series. It’s a notable gamble by Marvel and Sony—and one that could breathe new life into the franchise following the multiversal chaos of No Way Home.

While fans wait for the first trailer or official synopsis, one thing is clear: The Punisher is back. And this time, he’s bringing his brand of justice to Spider-Man’s world.

Bernthal is an OK Punisher, but Holland is an awful Spider-Man.

I don’t mind Bernthal, he’s better than some of the other folks who have played the character, but they give him such terrible material to work with. I like Holland as Spider-Man, though I was hoping they’d move on after No Way Home.

I heard they did Punisher dirty in the last Daredevil D+ series. I haven’t bothered to watch it because D+ ruined Daredevil and Kingpin forever. The first, even though they say it wasn’t canonical, was the “Walk of Shame” in She-Hulk, the other by getting his ass beat by a cripple, deaf, mute girl then (presumably) shot in the head, then in the rematch she kicks his ass by using her Injun juju to “heal his past trauma.”

As big a mess the 2004 movie was, I liked Thomas Jane’s Punisher after they did the short for “Dirty Laundry”. To me that showed both the director and actor were finally understanding the core of the character. To bad they f’ed up the first movie; no one wanted to give them a second hit at the pipe.
