The verdict is in for Jonathan Majors. And as he has been found guilty of physical abuse, he is now also terminated as a participant in the MCU.

Just as we entered the commencement of Christmas holidays for so many, the actor Jonathan Majors found himself in the crucible of judgment. Deemed guilty on charges of assault and harassment following a trial centered around troubling domestic violence allegations, Majors’ career and legacy are in serious jeopardy. The ramifications of this verdict reverberated through the corridors of Marvel Studios, leading to the unequivocal termination of Majors from his role as Kang. As a consequence, the studio will be forced to reconfigure vast plans and untold amounts of investment.

In the aftermath of this development, The Hollywood Reporter delivered its account, explaining that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, once a heralded title, now lies in the ashes of rewriters. Internally, the project undergoes a metamorphosis, shedding its former name to be succinctly referred to as Avengers 5 for the interim.

Marvel has two courses it could take now. It could recast the part, although it is not clear how many actors would be attracted to a role from which one actor was so publicly fired. The other course is to redevelop its plans and refocus on a brand new villain. While Marvel sources are mum, there is indication that the studio has already been doing just that. In November, Marvel hired Loki creator Michael Waldron to work on a new draft of what was once called Kang Dynasty, but is now being referred to as Avengers 5, according to sources.

The studio has had months to plan for such an eventuality, and it’s possible that Waldon was part of that course correction.

The inflection point of Majors’ narrative, marked by an arrest on March 25, saw the actor calling emergency services after purportedly discovering his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari, unconscious in their New York residence. A disconcerting tableau unfolded as the police discovered injuries on Jabbari, including a bruised and fractured finger and a laceration behind an ear. Majors, maintaining his innocence, entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. A video released later would show that Majors had attempted to flee Jabbari at least once. Whatever the truth might be behind the tumultuous relationship, Majors was decided to be at fault. How Marvel would have reacted had he been acquitted is unknown.

How people will react is likely to be divisive given the various pieces of evidence made public.

In the wake of these legal tribulations, the once-sturdy support structures began to unravel. The PR firm, The Lede Company, and Majors’ managerial moorings at Entertainment 360 severed their ties with the actor. Whether Majors will even have representation soon is questionable. It is a very sad day for those who thought he might be a rising star and influence for the better. The road to redemption is fraught with challenges for Majors and it will be a long one indeed.

The bottom line is Jonathan Majors is now known as the former actor who played Kang and a man who abused his girlfriend. It is a scarlet letter that will be difficult to shed.
