Jonathan Majors Has Big Problems AND Familiar Company

Haven’t we seen this sort of drama before? Only in this case, there’s an entire universe of movies depending on the outcome.

Hello, internet police?  I’d like to report arson.

Yes, it happened in a police car or maybe an apartment, the details are a little hazy.

No, there isn’t any property damage, the fire was metaphorical.

I can see your confusion, but the internet police aren’t real either.

Look, I’ll explain.  On March 25th the police responded to a domestic disturbance call in New York City.  Jonathan Majors was somehow involved with the whole thing.

No, you’re thinking of the Six Million Dollar Man.  This is JONATHAN Majors.

Yeah, I’ve heard good things too.

No, I haven’t actually seen anything he’s been in either.  That’s why I’m calling.

Just a few weeks before the assault incident there was a barrage of positive stories about this guy who has 19 acting credits for released projects on IMDb.  He’s supposed to be the next Brando, Olivier, and Washington all rolled into one.  To get that kind of attention you need some money behind you.  All that money and effort went up in smoke the second the public found out about the charges.  Projects on the horizon are disappearing; partners are pulling advertisements; managers are cutting ties.  Majors was hot stuff a month ago and now it seems he’s untouchable.  People who claim to have known him for a long time are suddenly being very public about the red flags in his behavior.

No, I’m not being cynical.  That’s just the way it is.  The entire media establishment is built on relationships and perception, so as soon as the perception shifts unfavorably against someone (and they are no longer useful) all those relationships go up in smoke.  Just as Harvey Weinstein, Keven Space, or Bill Cosby.  There were rumors and jokes about them all for over a decade until suddenly public sentiment soured on them.  After that everyone in the media acted as if they couldn’t possibly have known.  Someone had to know.

If I was being cynical, I’d say that someone has paid for everything you see, hear, and read.  Servers and broadcasts cost money.

John Schnatter hired a firm to raise his profile since he was the face of the company he founded, Papa John’s.  You may have heard about that little incident and the alleged recording of the people he hired plotting to ruin him for not thinking like them.  Turns out that if you don’t hold the right opinions some marketing major can get your company taken away from you for not having the right opinion.

How about I give you an example that’s less inflammatory.  Years ago, there was this actress, not untalented, but not A-List talented.  The narrative is that after she had a kid she started a company to make all natural household products, particularly she didn’t want petrochemicals.  For a while the implication was that she ran the day to day of the company.  That’s when my lie detector went off.  Let’s fast forward a few years and at the same time several grocery store check-out aisle magazines were doing puff pieces on her, online outlets were doing pieces about her picking up the tab for a restaurant full of people to celebrate the company doing a billion dollars in sales.  Fast forward a few more years and it turns out that their products are more like the others on the market than they are different.

None of this is real.  Yes, some of it happened (some of it didn’t), but that doesn’t really matter.  What matters is that you keep clicking, watching through the next commercial break, and going to movies with the names you recognize.  If you keep doing that then the media world will continue to feed each other’s egos and vices.  When a little light gets shed on some unacceptable colleague, the rest of the entertainment complex with fan the flames and try to get a little heat for themselves.
