Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World will be reopening on December 12, 2025, following its annual refurbishment that began on October 6, 2025.

This is earlier than usual as the ride’s refurbishment generally takes place during January and February. Some years have seen the ride reopen as late as March. This earlier refurbishment appears connected to the impending changes at DinoLand U.S.A.

With that land slated for full closure in early 2026, the resort adjusted the maintenance schedule so Kali River Rapids could once again be available before DinoLand shuts down.

Animal Kingdom’s shrinking attraction roster

The reopening of Kali River Rapids comes as the overall number of available rides and experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has declined — and is set to shrink further. Several attractions and attractions‑adjacent offerings have closed in 2025 as part of a phased transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. into a new land, Tropical Americas / Pueblo Esperanza.

Key closures and changes include:

  • TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures permanently closed on January 13, 2025 (last operating day January 12).

  • The Boneyard — a fossil-themed playground — closed permanently on September 2, 2025.

  • The main attraction of DinoLand’s dinosaur-themed offerings, DINOSAUR, is scheduled to permanently close on February 2, 2026.

  • Dino‑Bite Snacks and Trilo‑Bites closed October 20, 2025. DinoLand’s last eating spots, Restaurantosaurus, is also set to close February 2, 2026.

As of December 2025 (with Kali River Rapids reopening), the attractions that remain operational at Animal Kingdom include Expedition Everest, Avatar Flight of Passage, Na’vi River Journey, and Kilimanjaro Safaris. The park also has a new show, Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, which replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug! in 2025.

Still — compared with previous years — the mixture of thrill rides, family attractions, shows, and children’s play spaces is noticeably reduced.

The reductions come as part of a broader initiative to reimagine DinoLand U.S.A. as Tropical Americas / Pueblo Esperanza. Disney officially confirmed the phased closures and projected that the new land would open around 2027.

According to planning documents and public updates, the reimagined area is expected to feature new attractions — including an “Indiana Jones”-style ride that will succeed DINOSAUR, a ride themed to Encanto and a carousel. Additional amenities include a quick‑service restaurant and a dedicated play area to replace The Boneyard.

Why Kali River Rapids’ return matters now

The reopening of Kali River Rapids on December 12th offers a modest yet tangible restoration for the park. As a water‑raft attraction, it adds variety to the mostly non‑water lineup during the cooler months, and gives guests one more classic ride before the larger shakeups begin.

Timing the reopening before the full shutdown of DinoLand U.S.A. appears to be a strategic decision. With DINOSAUR and the rest of the land gone after early 2026, restoring Kali River Rapids now helps mitigate the net loss of ride capacity.

However, even with Kali River Rapids back online, the overall count of attractions remains slim. The park has fewer family‑style rides, fewer children’s play areas, and fewer older — but still steady — offerings. Until the opening of Tropical Americas / Pueblo Esperanza (expected 2027), visitors may need to adjust expectations when planning a visit.

Conclusion

The announced reopening of Kali River Rapids on December 12, 2025, provides a small but meaningful boost to the offerings at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Yet, the park’s overall roster is considerably reduced, due to permanent closures and the upcoming shutdown of DinoLand U.S.A. in early 2026.

A whole new area with attractions is set for 2027. But for visitors of Animal Kingdom for 2026, there simply is not as much to do.
