Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has found her next major Hollywood assignment, and the irony is difficult to ignore. After spending 14 years overseeing a Star Wars franchise that increasingly struggled to maintain goodwill among longtime fans, Kennedy has been tapped to help produce one of the world’s largest celebrations of international unity.

Kennedy will serve as Head of Ceremonies and Content for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, overseeing the opening and closing ceremonies for both events.

According to Variety, Kennedy replaces former Disney executive Peter Rice, who recently became Netflix’s chief content officer. Rice will remain involved as an executive producer.

For Kennedy, the appointment represents another prestigious position in the entertainment industry following her departure from Lucasfilm in January.

For Star Wars fans who watched the franchise endure years of controversial creative decisions, disappointing theatrical performances, and abandoned projects, however, the news might inspire something closer to disbelief.

After all, what better person to bring the world together than an executive whose most recent tenure became synonymous with divisions within one of entertainment’s most passionate fan communities?

Olympic Organizers Praise Kennedy’s Storytelling Abilities

The official LA28 announcement celebrated Kennedy’s extensive Hollywood résumé, emphasizing her involvement in more than 70 feature films that collectively received 120 Academy Award nominations and 25 wins.

LA28 Chairman and President Casey Wasserman offered particularly enthusiastic praise.

“Kathleen is a legend. She is one of Hollywood’s all-time greats, with a rare gift for storytelling,” Wasserman said.

He added that he could not think of anyone better to bring Hollywood’s magic to the international sporting event.

Kennedy will work alongside executive producer and creative director Ben Winston and veteran Olympic ceremonies producer Scott Givens.

The assignment includes four major productions, beginning with the Olympic Opening Ceremony on July 14, 2028, and concluding with the Paralympic Closing Ceremony on August 27.

Kennedy expressed excitement about the opportunity, explaining that she and her husband, producer Frank Marshall, have attended nearly every Olympic Games since Los Angeles hosted the event in 1984.

“The Olympics have been a touchstone in my life,” Kennedy said, adding that sports remain among the great experiences capable of bringing people together.

That emphasis on bringing people together is precisely what makes the appointment so remarkable.

Kennedy’s Star Wars Legacy Remains Deeply Divisive

There is no denying Kennedy’s accomplishments as a Hollywood producer.

Her career includes involvement with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and numerous other beloved productions. Her association with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment helped establish her as one of the industry’s most influential producers.

However, her tenure as Lucasfilm president produced a far more complicated legacy.

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the company inherited one of the most recognizable entertainment properties in history. The expectation was that Disney would build upon George Lucas’ creation while introducing it to new generations.

Initially, the financial results were extraordinary.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens generated more than $2 billion worldwide, demonstrating the enormous appetite audiences still had for the franchise.

But that enthusiasm proved difficult to sustain.

The Last Jedi became a major flashpoint among fans, particularly over its treatment of Luke Skywalker. Solo: A Star Wars Story subsequently became a significant theatrical disappointment, while The Rise of Skywalker concluded Disney’s sequel trilogy amid criticism of its inconsistent storytelling and creative direction.

The franchise’s theatrical difficulties were accompanied by an extensive collection of announced projects that never reached audiences.

Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, a proposed Star Wars film involving Kevin Feige, and a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss all became examples of Lucasfilm’s troubled development pipeline.

Disney’s expansion into streaming initially offered renewed hope through The Mandalorian, but subsequent productions encountered their own difficulties.

The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi received mixed reactions, while The Acolyte became particularly controversial before Disney declined to renew the series for a second season.

Although productions such as Andor earned substantial critical praise, the overall direction of the franchise remained contentious.

Kennedy was hardly responsible for every individual creative decision. Nevertheless, as president of Lucasfilm, she was ultimately accountable for the studio’s broader strategy.

The contrast between the optimism surrounding Disney’s acquisition and the franchise’s subsequent struggles remains a defining element of her leadership.

Can Kennedy Deliver a Celebration That Actually Unites Audiences?

The Olympic Games present a substantially different challenge from managing an established entertainment franchise.

Unlike Star Wars, the Olympics don’t require maintaining fictional continuity, developing theatrical trilogies, or satisfying generations of fans invested in particular characters.

Instead, the ceremonies are expected to celebrate athletic achievement, international cooperation, and the cultural identity of the host nation.

Those objectives also create an opportunity for Kennedy to demonstrate her considerable production experience outside the shadow of Lucasfilm.

However, the modern entertainment industry’s tendency to incorporate political and ideological messaging into major productions has already made some audiences skeptical of Hollywood’s approach to large-scale cultural events.

Kennedy’s association with Disney-era Star Wars is unlikely to alleviate those concerns.

Will the ceremonies emphasize athletic excellence and the achievements of competitors, or will Hollywood’s creative priorities overshadow the athletes themselves?

There is currently no indication that Kennedy intends to introduce any particular political messaging into the ceremonies. Her appointment also does not give her exclusive creative control, with Winston and Givens occupying significant production roles.

Nevertheless, the question of whether Hollywood can deliver a genuinely unifying spectacle without introducing unnecessary cultural controversies is a legitimate one.

The Olympics should be about the athletes, their countries, and the extraordinary accomplishments that brought them to the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Those elements should remain the focus regardless of which Hollywood executives are overseeing the production.

Another Prestigious Assignment After Lucasfilm

Kennedy’s appointment also highlights the remarkable staying power of established Hollywood executives.

Despite the criticism surrounding her Lucasfilm leadership, Kennedy has moved directly into another extraordinarily prominent entertainment assignment.

For LA28 organizers, her decades of production experience and extensive industry relationships presumably make her an attractive choice.

For critics of Disney’s handling of Star Wars, however, the decision is another example of Hollywood’s willingness to reward executives whose recent creative leadership generated considerable audience dissatisfaction.

Whether that skepticism proves justified will ultimately depend on the finished ceremonies.

Kennedy certainly has the experience necessary to oversee a major production, and the Olympics provide an opportunity to deliver something that audiences around the world can celebrate together.

Still, after watching Lucasfilm announce numerous Star Wars productions that never materialized, fans might be forgiven for wondering whether all four Olympic ceremonies will actually happen as planned.

Fortunately, unlike the abandoned projects of Disney-era Star Wars, the Olympics have firmly established dates.

And this time, Kathleen Kennedy won’t have the luxury of pushing the release schedule back another three years.
