Kathleen Kennedy Indeed Receives Three Year Contract Extension

It’s going to be a long winter for anyone who was wanting Kathleen Kennedy to sail away from Lucasfilm and Star Wars. The contract extension I broke exclusively here at That Park Place more than two weeks ago is confirmed to be a three-year extension for the incredibly divisive head of Lucasfilm.

Kathleen Kennedy Signed to Three Year Deal Thru 2024

I took a bit of heat when I announced that Kathleen Kennedy had likely received a contract extension. This followed on an article I did based on what I was hearing through back channels about Kennedy’s contract negotiations. All the way back in September, I was telling readers that Kennedy was almost certainly returning.

Kathleen Kennedy Almost Certain to Receive Contract Extension

And yes, it is still the case that Kathleen Kennedy has lost the confidence of Bob Chapek and the rest of The Walt Disney Company’s upper brass. That is what makes this entire situation so utterly bizarre.

I had expected that Kennedy would receive a one-year extension and a guaranteed executive producer role on Indiana Jones 5. At the most, I thought Kennedy would get a two-year extension. The decision to give Kennedy a three-year deal flies in the face of the changes CEO Chapek has been attempting to push throughout Disney. He’s very much wanted to move away from longer contracts, and more towards performance-based deals with short-term limits.

From a personal standpoint, I don’t see Star Wars recovering until Kathleen Kennedy is gone, and this is more or less a cinematic nail in the coffin. Sure, there will be Disney+ content headed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni… but as far as movies go, she’s already run Patty Jenkins off. There’s nothing else for the next three years. Star Wars has gone from the hottest property on the planet to the current situation. And in no small part, I believe Kennedy’s mismanagement of Lucasfilm is what led to the Gina Carano situation, which almost certainly led to the collapse in Disney+ subscriber growth.

One thing that I’ve heard repeatedly is that Kathleen Kennedy is a vicious negotiator. I have little doubt that she planned to leave on her own terms, and it would seem Bob Chapek has met his match. Perhaps he can call George Lucas so the two can discuss the utter prowess of one Kathleen Kennedy. After all, they and Bob Iger form a trio of men who have been unable to tango with Mrs. Kennedy.

From a personal standpoint, I certainly wish that Kennedy had gone into the sunset. Indiana Jones 5 has been a disaster, Star Wars is a highly damaged brand, and everything about her endeavors is politicized. But even in the face of all that, you’ll notice I’ve been saying for months that KK was being rehired. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Kathleen Kennedy is victorious, even if the fans and Disney are not.

Truly unfortunate for those of us raised on Star Wars. Does Does Disney not understand that gen-X and gen Y who’s parent gave us the Star Wars toys and merchandise years ago are the people who could be buying merchandise today for ourselves and our kids. I suspect the profit margins are reduced significantly due to this type of; to borrow a British term, wankery.

Even Screen Rant is saying “reportedly”. I’ve not seen an official announcement from Disney/Lucasfilm. Is it possible that this is misinformation from Kennedy’s camp? Please… tell me it’s possible! Hollywood is killing everything I loved. Superman – dead, Wolverine – dead, Captain America – dead, Tony Stark – dead, Kirk – dead, Spock – dead, Picard – dead, Han Solo – dead, Luke – dead, Leia – dead, Dr. Who – dead, Indiana Jones – dead… the Butcher’s Bill just goes on and on. They are trying to kill “Lord of the Rings”, “Cowboy Bebop”, “Ghostbusters”, “Wheel of Time”… “Star Wars” was hanging on by the thinnest of threads. It was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater as a child. If this is true, then “Star Wars” is truly dead. Is there still hope that this is still a rumor?

Yeah… I saw that. I swear, the only way any of this could make sense is if Lawrence Fishburn showed up on my couch offering me cold medicine.
Hollywood wants money. Disney wants money. The comic book industry wants money. You put the three together, however, and it’s like they’re in a contest to see who can lose the most money the fastest! That is LITERALLY what it feels like!
I will live in denial a bit longer, I guess. Wait until it is confirmed, watch Overlord DVD’s reaction, and then I think I will go back to reading as my primary form of distraction and entertainment. Probably healthier, anyway.

I think I may have figured it out. Disney is losing money, hand-over-fist, with Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy appears to be the causes of those losses. So, it makes no sense to keep her on, right? But what if it DOES make sense? What if it doesn’t make sense to us because we are looking at it from the perspective of making money and staying profitable?

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Kathleen Kennedy DOESN’T want Lucasfilm to make money and stay profitable. Okay, so why would she take the job? Well, she’s married to Frank Marshall, so she has money, so that’s not likely the reason. Power and influence? She has all of her friends and contacts as well as her husband’s, so that’s not likely it. What if it is something as simple as vengeance?

Hear me out. She’s worked with men her entire life. Not as an equal, but as someone more in the background. She’s seen a lot. I imagine that the more she stayed in the background, the more she saw and the more dirt she collected. I am fairly certain that she has dirt on just about everyone who matters in Hollywood, including Mr. Speilberg. Which could be why she was credited with producing films like “Lincoln” (Golden Globes and Oscar Nominations… which was a far cry from what she’s doing to Star Wars, so, yeah… it was probably Spielberg doing the heavy lifting and giving her the credit. Something we see her doing with “The Mandalorian”).

Now, imagine that Kennedy has it in for George Lucas. Why? I am thinking it had something to do with the first “Indiana Jones” movie. Probably, George and Steve were talking about how terrible an assistant Kathleen was. I imagine, that was the start of Kathleen’s desire to rise through the ranks and shove it all back down their throats.

She began to use some of those dirty tidbits she collected to take more credit and claim awards, titles, and stature. Still, she was doing it to get back at those who felt they were above her. White men and their toxic masculinity.

Finally, she got up close and personal with George and he was starting to talk about getting out of Lucasfilm. Kennedy earned George’s trust, never letting on that she secretly wanted to destroy him and everything he stood for. During that time, where she had to be there at his beck and call just like a nefarious niece, waiting for her rich uncle to die and leave her his fortune.

Finally, the time is right. Kathleen leans on Spielberg a little to get his endorsement and, keeping her glee in check until the papers are signed. Saying everything George wants to hear… Then it’s all hers!

Now she’s got everyone over the barrel. Disney can’t get rid of her because they get pressure from those people she has dirt on to keep her happy. She’s costing them billions. She’s destroying George’s legacy, one character at a time. No one can do anything about her bleeding the money away. Sooner or later, Disney will have to dump Lucasfilm because it not only never made money, it is costing them more than they paid for it. When that happens, Kathleen’s victory will be complete. She’s already gotten them to shelve and delay anything to do with Star Wars. If her female director won’t make a movie that would further destroy the franchise, then she finds another one who will.

This is my theory.

Until there’s something official from Disney, I’m taking a wait and see approach.

None of us know how the contract reads; what sort of stops or controls are/or could be in it. Pure speculation here…she might have been forced to sign a contract limiting her power, and/or one with consequences of overreach. She might have signed it as opposed to hanging her head in shame as she was let go. Let’s just step back and see how this unfolds from here.
