Katy Perry was at the precipice of the end. The pop star who has had a tumultuous year, to say the least, almost tumbled off of a gothic butterfly prop into the crowd far below at one of her recent concerts last week. It’s not the first time that Perry has put herself at great risk during a show, and not the first time that a major female artist has nearly seen the tunnel of light trying to keep audiences coming to see them.

Luckily for Perry, this time, the artist was saved by the cord not completely giving way on the prop and the fact that she was able to hang on and not fall off. Though tethered to the butterfly, had Perry fallen off the turbulence-ridden insect, she may have created a second “give” in the tension. Perry can be heard shrieking in the video before regaining her composure. After the performance, the lights were dimmed and she was helped off by technicians.
However, this is a trend now for Perry… and for others.
Earlier this year, Perry was performing inside a hanging, giant hamster ball. After the music stopped and it was time to exit the strange device, the ball instead lifted and then titled, locking Perry in a strange position. Once again, had Perry slipped further or had the title continued, she may have been hanging for dear life from one of the most ridiculous ways to “go out” in the history of humanity.
When it rains, it “Roars” 😭

It goes beyond Katy Perry. Beyoncé recently became “stuck” in a fake, red convertible while performing a number intended to speak to the “decline of America”. Instead, the star was slowly lowered from a nearly-tipped-over fake-mobile. Commentators watching the event were displeased with security crews and technicians who were not ready to help Beyoncé if she were to fall from the faux vehicle.
All of this seems to be part of a desperate attempt by some aging female pop stars to stay relevant and keep audiences coming back. For some, it’s death-defying stunts that aren’t being carried out very well. For others, like Jennifer Lopez or Madonna, it’s acting incredibly vulgar.

The sad thing for many of these stars is that their concerts are really not vocal performances they give, but rather pre-processed soundscapes where they add a small lead to the various backtracks. The real draw is their brand and the nutty stunts and visuals audiences now demand. That makes it less a musical concert and more a Cirque du Solei. And unfortunately for these aging pop stars, they’re not athletes, stunt performers, or young enough to just bounce back if something goes wrong.
So a quick reminder, to everyone in jeopardy on stage at a pop concert: maybe let the accidents happen in the audience, please?

These female performers have hit the wall–with some like Madonna having hit it decades ago–and they’re desperate to prove to themselves that they still have something to offer. To the point that apparently death is preferable to simply fading away gracefully. What none of them realize is they’ll be forgotten no matter what they do to try and stay in the public eye. They haven’t established a lasting legacy like Aretha Franklin or Elvis; they’ve simply burned out.
Leave the stunts for the men, who know what they are doing, Katie.
Is that how it’s pronounced? With it spelled katy, I assumed her name was “catty”.
🤓
Remember when people just used to sing at concerts?
AND play real instruments.
Without auto-tune. (A curse).
Thank god for her exhaustive astronaut training. Surely that’s what saved her. What a hero!
Heroine. (Female).
