Scream may continue on the big screen after the success of Scream 7, but the filmmaker who created the franchise and just helmed its latest installment says he likely won’t be the one behind the camera. According to comments from franchise creator Kevin Williamson, Scream 8 is unlikely to see him return as director.

Williamson, who wrote the original Scream in 1996 and returned to direct the recently released Scream 7, made the remarks during an interview with Hello Sidney. While the filmmaker remains part of the franchise’s extended creative family, he indicated that his time directing Ghostface may already be finished.

Kevin Williamson Says He’s Stepping Back From Directing the Franchise

When asked whether working on Scream 7 made him want to direct another installment in the series, Williamson made it clear that the answer is likely no.

“Not Scream, no,” Williamson said with a laugh when asked if his work on Scream 7 made him want to do more directing. “I want to direct another film that I had written that is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. And right now, I’m working on a couple TV shows that I’m really excited about. So maybe I’ll direct one of those — who knows? For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again.”

So, while Scream 8 is rumored to be moving forward at Paramount, Kevin Williamson doesn’t intend to return to the director’s chair for it.

Instead, the Scream creator appears open to allowing another filmmaker to continue the long-running horror saga.

Williamson Says Another Storyteller Could Take the Franchise Forward

Despite stepping away from directing duties, Williamson didn’t rule out the possibility of contributing ideas for the next film. At the same time, he seemed enthusiastic about seeing what a different creative voice might bring to the franchise.

“I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it,” he said. “I hope that we get the chance to do it. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct. Other people can take the reins. I’m excited to see what other storytellers come up with.”

Williamson’s comments highlight a familiar challenge for long-running horror franchises: balancing the legacy of the original creators with the need for fresh ideas that can keep audiences interested.

Whether that transition works for Scream will ultimately depend on how fans respond.

Kevin Williamson Has Only Directed One Scream Film

While Kevin Williamson is the creative force behind the Scream franchise, he has only stepped behind the camera for one film in the series.

Williamson wrote the original Scream in 1996, which was directed by the late Wes Craven and went on to become one of the most influential horror movies of the modern era. He also wrote Scream 2 and later returned to write Scream 4 in 2011.

Despite being the franchise’s creator, Williamson didn’t direct a Scream movie until Scream 7, making it his first (and presumably last) time directing an installment in the series.

That context makes his comments about stepping away from directing Scream 8 less surprising. While he helped shape the franchise’s voice from the beginning, Williamson has historically been more involved as a writer and producer rather than the director guiding Ghostface on screen.

A Green Light for Scream 8 Has Not Yet Happened

Even with Scream 7 performing well at the box office, the next sequel hasn’t officially been confirmed yet.

Kevin Williamson acknowledged that discussions about Scream 8 haven’t begun in any formal capacity.

“I’m hopeful there will be an 8,” he said. “No one’s really talking about it yet. We just assume, with the box office, we hope there will be one. But no one’s talking.”

Hollywood trades, however, have been buzzing about Scream 8, with rumors flying about the next installment since the blockbuster opening weekend of Scream 7.

Scream 7 Continues the Franchise’s Box Office Momentum

The latest installment, Scream 7, stars Neve Campbell alongside Isabel May and Anna Camp. The film centers on Sidney Prescott fearing for the safety of her daughter when a new Ghostface killer emerges.

The movie has already surpassed $150 million at the global box office, demonstrating that the decades-old horror franchise still has a significant audience.

However, critical reaction from Hollywood reviewers has been far less enthusiastic. Several industry critics have panned Scream 7, even as audience scores for the film have surged and moviegoers continue turning out in theaters.

With the sequel already surpassing $150 million at the global box office, the franchise’s latest chapter appears to be connecting strongly with fans despite the colder reception from critics.

The Franchise’s Future Remains Unclear

For now, the future of the series remains uncertain. If Scream 8 does move forward (and it’s very likely that it will), another filmmaker will be tasked with taking up the legacy of Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven to guide Ghostface’s next chapter.

While Williamson helped create the franchise that became one of horror’s most enduring brands, it sounds like he’s ready to watch the next installment from the sidelines — at least when it comes to directing.

Whether that change helps reinvigorate the series or pushes it into sequel fatigue is something fans may find out soon enough.
