Lea Michele Is Returning as Rachel Berry in the Glee Reboot

Rachel Berry is getting back on stage. Lea Michele is returning to the role that made her famous in the Glee reboot from Ryan Murphy for Disney+ and Hulu, according to Variety, which confirmed the news with multiple sources.

“She’s in,” one source told Variety. Another added, “It’s still early-ish days, but it feels good and we’re happy to get the band back together.”

Michele may not be the only original star coming back. Heather Morris, who played Brittany Pierce, and Chord Overstreet, who played Sam Evans, have both made social media posts that seem to hint they’ll return, according to Variety.

Disney hasn’t officially announced the cast, a premiere date, or how the new series will connect to the original story. Still, getting Michele on board is a big step for a show that was built around Rachel’s journey.

Here’s what Murphy and Michele have said so far.

Ryan Murphy Has Been Calling the Original Cast

Murphy recently told Entertainment Tonight, in comments reported by Variety, that he’d written a Glee reboot script with his longtime collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.

“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members,” he said. “It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Michele said she was open to returning back in September.

“I love Glee. I will always love Glee,” she told E! News at New York Fashion Week on September 11. “I love Ryan Murphy. It just holds such a special place in my heart for me. I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”

Murphy didn’t name the other cast members he’d talked to, so fans are already guessing who’ll join Michele, Morris, and Overstreet.

The original show also launched the careers of several young stars, and many of them have stayed close over the years. That bond is part of why fans think Murphy won’t have trouble getting more of the cast back for the new series.

Morris and Overstreet haven’t made official announcements, but their posts were enough to get fans talking about which members of New Directions could follow them back to McKinley.

A Look Back at Glee’s Original Run

Glee ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015, and its series finale aired on March 20, 2015. The show followed the New Directions glee club at William McKinley High School and mixed its high school stories with big musical numbers.

Michele came to the show from Broadway, where she starred in Spring Awakening. Her work as Rachel earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and she later returned to Broadway to star in Funny Girl in 2022.

Glee was one of the biggest hits of its era, and its cover songs regularly landed on the music charts. A reboot gives Disney a chance to bring those fans back while introducing the show to a new generation on streaming.

Variety didn’t report a timeline for production.
