Speaking with The Messenger, Child confirmed that he and Prime Video have chosen which book the third season will adapt, but he didn’t say which one.

He said, “We’ve picked it up, it’s chosen. It’s a good choice, I gotta say. I think we’ve been very creative about how we’ve sequenced the type of story.”

While Child did not reveal which book will be adapted, he did share that it will see Reacher primarily working by himself compared to the team effort that’s taking place in Season 2.

He relayed, “We felt we needed a book that was more Reacher alone for the third season.”

“And so it was a question of which story would work best for that, and which one would have a great opening scene and all of that, and we found one that we loved,” Child elaborated.

The first season of Reacher adapted the Killing Floor novel, which was the first novel in Child’s Reacher series. However, for Season 2 they adapted Bad Luck and Trouble, which is the 11th novel in the series.

There are 27 novels in the Jack Reacher series so there are clearly plenty of options to choose from.

The third season of Reacher was announced as the second season debuted on the streaming platform with the show’s star Alan Ritchson announcing it was already in production, “You’re on the set of Season 3 of Reacher right now. We’re officially under way.”

As noted above, the second season of Reacher is currently airing on Prime Video and is being released in weekly installments following a three-episode debut on the streamer.

The second season of Reacher “begins when veteran military police investigator Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) receives a coded message that the members of his former U.S. Army unit, the 110th MP Special Investigations, are being mysteriously and brutally murdered one by one.”

The official description continues, “Pulled from his drifter lifestyle, Reacher reunites with three of his former teammates turned chosen family to investigate, including Frances Neagley (Maria Sten); Karla Dixon (Serinda Swan), a forensic accountant for whom Reacher has long had a soft spot; and fast-talking, switchblade-wielding family man David O’Donnell (Shaun Sipos).”

“Together, they begin to connect the dots in a mystery where the stakes get higher at every turn, and that brings about questions of who has betrayed them—and who will die next. Using his inimitable blend of smarts and size, Reacher will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and protect the members of his unit. If there’s one thing Reacher and his team know for certain, it’s that you do not mess with the Special Investigators. This season, get ready for Reacher and the 110th to hit back hard,” the description concludes.

The second season has seen enormous growth in the show’s viewership. The first season, which released all eight of its episodes at once racked up 1.84 billion minutes back in its first week back in February 2022 according to Nielsen.

The week of the show’s second season three-episode premiere debuted, the entire show brought in 1.687 billion minutes. It’s unclear how many of those minutes are people watching just the Season 2 episodes or people tuning in for the first time to watch the first season or even rewatch the first season to get caught back up for Season 2.

Deadline’s Katie Campione also reported that the first episodes of Reacher Season 2 “surpassed the entire Season 1 audience by 50% in the first three days on the streamer.”

Campione also claims that the series is the best performing program “in terms of total viewers” on Prime Video for 2023.

It’s also the biggest premiere for a TV show since The Rings of Power released last last year. However, that show reportedly saw 63% of its initial audience fail to complete the series, a sign of its poor quality.

Clearly, Prime Video has a hit on its hands and it’s likely the show will have a fourth season too if the ratings remain as good as they are.
