Former Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde has addressed whether Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will include live animals. And it is not looking good for those hoping for new critters coming anytime soon.
Rohde recently responded to an Instagram comment, saying there are currently no plans to add live animals to the new land. He also said he believes Tropical Americas would benefit from having animals. His comments leave open the possibility of animals being added later.
Rohde played a major role in developing Animal Kingdom. He served as the park’s lead designer and helped establish its approach to combining attractions, architecture, landscapes and animals.
No Current Plans for Live Animals in Tropical Americas
Rohde shared what the update and reasoning behind it on Instagram.
I agree that live animals are an important part of the park and that Tropical Americas would be better with live animals. But each opportunity for expansion also comes from a business opportunity. And in this case, the park needs rides for young people…preferably air-conditioned rides for a young people. And so out of a total budget, which, let me remind you is a budget for a remodel not a virgin ground entirely built from scratch land, the driving business priorities have to be met… Because that’s where the deal comes from. However, I do believe animals are important, and I do believe that they should be included in the future when a business plan can be written for that effort.

Because the new area is not on new land, but instead working with what used to be DinoLand U.S.A., that makes it more difficult to provide everything hoped for in a new land while staying on budget.
His comments provide a more specific answer to the question of live animals in Tropical Americas. There are no current plans for new live-animal habitats, but the possibility has not been permanently eliminated.
What Is Planned for Tropical Americas
Tropical Americas is replacing DinoLand U.S.A. at Animal Kingdom. Disney announced the project in 2024 and said the new land would center on Pueblo Esperanza, a fictional community set within a rainforest environment.
Disney plans to open Tropical Americas in 2027. The land will include two major attractions, one based on Encanto and another featuring Indiana Jones. It will also include a carousel and other guest amenities.
The Encanto attraction, Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, will take guests into the Madrigal family’s Casita. The story follows Antonio as he discovers his ability to communicate with animals. Disney says the attraction will include more than 50 represented animals. Those animals will appear as part of the attraction rather than as live specimens.

The second major attraction, Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, will take guests into an ancient Maya temple. Indiana Jones encounters a giant serpent called Tsukán during the adventure.
Tropical Americas will also feature El Carrusel de los Animalitos. Disney says the carousel will include 22 hand-carved animal figures inspired by Disney and Pixar characters.
These attractions incorporate animals into the land’s storytelling and design, but without more live creatures to care for.
The Role of Animals in Tropical Americas
Although the current project does not include live animals, animals remain part of its themes.
Disney has described Tropical Americas as a land drawing inspiration from the cultures, environments and wildlife of the region. Imagineers conducted research in locations including Honduras and Colombia during the development process.

Animal representation also plays a role in Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto. Disney has said the attraction’s animal characters reflect species associated with Colombia.
For visitors expecting a live-animal component, however, those experiences will not provide the same type of encounter as Animal Kingdom’s existing habitats.
Tropical Americas Will Open Without a Live-Animal Habitat
Live animals form an important part of Animal Kingdom’s existing identity. The park includes animal habitats and exhibits in its other geographical areas, Africa and Asia, along with animal-care and conservation programs.
That is what makes this upcoming land odd from its beginning.
Tropical Americas is not planned to open with a new live-animal habitat. Rohde’s comments also leave room for a future change. He said animals could be considered if funding and a business plan become available. Disney has not announced such a project.

For now, the land’s animal content will come through its attractions, figures, environmental design and storytelling. The project remains under construction and is scheduled to open in 2027.
As Tropical Americas moves toward completion, Disney could provide additional details about the land’s animal-related elements. Unless the company announces a change, however, guests should not expect a new live-animal habitat when the land opens.
