Years after Disney canceled The Acolyte following a single disastrous season, creator Leslye Headland is still holding onto hope that the series could one day return for season 2.
In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Headland revealed she would gladly come back for a second season and, perhaps more importantly, confirmed that future episodes would have pushed even deeper into connections with Disney’s controversial sequel trilogy.
Oh boy…
For many Star Wars fans, that revelation may explain exactly why enthusiasm for The Acolyte Season 2 remains difficult to find.
Headland Still Wants To Continue The Story
Despite Disney’s decision to pull the plug on the series, Headland says she remains interested in continuing the story.
“I would still want to do it! Absolutely,” she told Empire.
The showrunner pointed to The Acolyte’s recent return to Disney+’s charts following the release of Maul: Shadow Lord as evidence that new viewers are still discovering the series.
However, appearing on Disney+’s internal charts does not necessarily indicate a significant increase in viewership. Disney has previously explained that its rankings are based on engagement rather than raw audience totals, which could be explained by The Acolyte autoplaying after episodes of Maul.
While Headland sees the show’s return to the charts as a positive sign, Disney already had access to the complete performance data for The Acolyte when it chose to cancel the series after a single season.

“As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back,” she added.
That optimism remains striking given the circumstances surrounding the show’s cancellation. Disney spent heavily to market The Acolyte as a major Star Wars event series, yet ultimately chose not to move forward with additional episodes.
The Acolyte Season 2 Was Going To Connect To The Sequel Trilogy
The most interesting revelation from the interview may be what Headland planned to do next.
According to the creator, Season 2 of The Acolyte would have expanded on Manny Jacinto’s mysterious Stranger character while building stronger links to sequel-era lore.
“We did have a lot of stuff that we wanted to explore — including tying in lore to the sequels,” Headland explained. “Getting into who exactly Manny’s character is, his connection with Vernestra, his connection with Plagueis, and then his connection with other sequel-established things.”

That’s likely to raise eyebrows among Star Wars fans who were already critical of Disney’s sequel trilogy.
Rather than moving away from one of the most divisive periods in franchise history, Headland’s vision appears to have leaned further into it.
While Lucasfilm spent years attempting to reconnect audiences with sequel-era storytelling, fan enthusiasm for that era remains far from universal. Sequel era projects have been routinely delayed or canceled, and rumors are flying that Disney is trying to now distance Star Wars from the divisive films.

For viewers who were already unconvinced by The Acolyte, hearing that Season 2 would have pushed deeper into sequel mythology is unlikely to serve as a major selling point.
She Compared The Acolyte To The Prequels…Again
Headland also suggested that perceptions of The Acolyte could change over time just as opinions on George Lucas’ prequel trilogy evolved.
“The weather changes with Star Wars,” she said. “There was a real negative reaction to [the Prequels], especially from a particular generation. And 25 years later, Hayden is at Celebration.”
It’s a comparison that many fans will likely challenge.

The prequel trilogy was certainly controversial when it debuted. However, those films also generated an enormous fanbase, inspired decades of expanded storytelling, produced The Clone Wars, and remained central to the Star Wars conversation for years.
The Acolyte finds itself in a very different position.

Rather than receiving additional seasons or spin-offs, the series was canceled after just one season. Disney had access to all of the internal viewing data, audience metrics, and financial information before making that decision.
That doesn’t mean opinions can’t change over time. It does mean the path followed by the prequels and the path followed by The Acolyte are not necessarily comparable.
Disney Already Made Its Decision
Ultimately, the biggest obstacle facing The Acolyte Season 2 isn’t fan opinion.
It’s Disney.
Headland may still want to continue the story. Some viewers may still hope to see where characters like Qimir, Osha, Darth Plagueis, and Vernestra eventually ended up.

But Disney already evaluated the performance of the series and decided against funding additional episodes.
And based on Headland’s latest comments, those future episodes would have moved even closer to the sequel trilogy era that many Star Wars fans have spent years criticizing.
Whether that revelation increases demand for a second season—or confirms why the first one struggled—will likely depend on who you ask.
