It’s not much of a confidence-booster to see that Indiana Jones 5 has its likes and dislikes completely disabled by Lucasfilm. This is very different than most trailers and may point to preemptive work to hide backlash.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has received its second trailer at Star Wars Celebration 2023. But an odd thing has happened. Those clicking on the video via the official Lucasfilm and Disney portals are greeted with an inability to like or dislike the movie trailer.
That’s particularly odd given that Disney’s recent Pixar film, which itself is tracking for a really poor box office showing, didn’t even get this sort of treatment. Elemental has its normal settings on so that people can click the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons.
What this then calls into question is:
Is Lucasfilm worried that Indiana Jones 5 is that unpopular? Or did Lucasfilm feel that this particular trailer is somehow that bad?
It’s tough to say, although the general sentiment about the trailer is that it feels washed-out, muddy, overly post-produced, and perhaps has tonal shifts away from what we’re accustomed to seeing in an Indiana Jones movie. Indy’s goddaughter also may be a bit of an anti-capitalist, self-important protagonist who takes away lots of time from the titular character.
At least that’s what it looks like from the trailer.
Here’s to hoping they pull off something great with Indiana Jones 5. Harrison Ford doesn’t get another swing at this and we’re all rooting for a good film to enjoy for one last ride.
