The gaming access media is pushing the narrative that there will be a boycott of Fortnite because of a recent rumor that Chapter 7 will be a Harry Potter collab. If this sounds like a familiar tune, you’re not wrong. It’s the same story repeating itself once again when it comes to any Potter project — the media amplifies outrage, and the audience ignores it and just keeps reading/watching/listening/playing.

This week, Screen Rant published an article titled “Fortnite Faces Boycott Over Leaked Harry Potter Collaboration,” highlighting a few progressive voices on Reddit calling for a boycott of Fortnite after a leaked crossover hinted at a Wizarding World event. The outcry, as usual, traces back to Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s views on gender politics.

But if history is any indication, these efforts won’t make a dent in sales, player numbers, or engagement.

A Familiar Script

It’s not the first time this song and dance has played out. When Hogwarts Legacy launched in early 2023, the gaming media framed it as a cultural flashpoint — with headlines about “moral responsibility,” calls to boycott, social-media pile-ons, and even some streamers getting harassed for simply playing the game.

And yet, despite that push, Hogwarts Legacy sold over 12 million copies in just two weeks, earning nearly $850 million in global revenue. By the end of 2024, the number had ballooned to more than 30 million copies sold worldwide. It was one of Warner Bros.’ most profitable single-player titles ever — not exactly the outcome you’d expect from a supposedly effective boycott.

Books, Audiobooks, and a Thriving Brand

Meanwhile, the Harry Potter franchise itself remains unstoppable. The new full-cast Harry Potter audiobooks that debuted this week on Audible shot up the charts and received strong reviews from both fans and critics. Two decades after its debut, the Wizarding World continues to move merchandise, generate new adaptations, and drive fan enthusiasm.

The failed boycotts are nothing new either. Some online pundits even tried to claim progressive backlash sank the Fantastic Beasts movie series. In reality, that franchise stumbled because audiences found it confusing, over-written, and — most importantly — missing the magic of Harry Potter himself.

Disconnect Between Gamers and the Gaming Press

That brings us back to this supposed Harry Potter Fortnite boycott.

Epic Games has made its fortune on cultural crossovers — Star Wars, Marvel, The Simpsons, Travis Scott, and countless others. Adding Harry Potter fits right into that lineup. And if the pattern holds, it will be a massive hit regardless of the noise.

But the mainstream gaming press seems eager to repeat the cycle — treating every rumor or leak as another moral crisis, hoping outrage translates into engagement. The problem is that gamers simply aren’t listening anymore. The same writers who scolded audiences over Hogwarts Legacy are once again warning about a Fortnite “controversy,” while players are more interested in new skins, gameplay modes, and collectibles.

The Reality Check

If anything, this latest push of a Fortnite “boycott” over Harry Potter only reinforces a growing divide between the gaming media establishment and everyday players. Fans have learned that moral lectures from access outlets rarely match how real communities behave. For millions of gamers, Harry Potter isn’t a political statement — it’s just good, nostalgic fun.

So when Fortnite inevitably launches its Wizarding World crossover, expect the usual think-pieces, hashtags, and online hand-wringing. Then expect it to make a fortune.
