Let’s just get straight to the truth: Shang-Chi may be the biggest bomb Marvel has ever produced. That’s tough to say after Black Widow just bombed at the box office, yet still is being litigated because its star actress claims to have been cut out of the profits via Disney’s choice to stream the film on Disney+. Still, Shang-Chi is projected to make between $40 – $50 million domestically over Labor Day Weekend, and the falloff afterwards is like to be brutal.

Yet despite Shang-Chi being well on its way to competing for the lowest modern Marvel movie in regards to income, you’d never know that if you just read the mainstream media. Just as we’ve seen over the past decade, the mainstream / access media machine is utter propaganda. Let’s just take a look at some of the top headlines going into Shang-Chi’s grand opening:

I also look forward to the first Marvel film starring an Afghani woman, considering we’ve just condemned them all to a life of hell. I’m sure that will fix everything. But in the meantime, we’re destroying hate crimes by having an Asian person star in a movie. I’m sure in the memory of the author, that’s never happened before, even though it has been rather common in the past twenty years.
Asian-Americans Are Finally Getting the Hero We Deserve
The star is Canadian, but even still, this sort of feels like the prelude to the “everyone is racist” follow-up once a bad movie bombs for no reason related to ethnicity. It will run in tandem with articles declaring it the best release of Labor Day ever, but just hold your nose and your logic while reading those juxtaposed pieces.

So there you have it. Shang-Chi is a record-breaking, hate crime stopping, Asian-empowerment film for women. That’s your mainstream media.

But Shang-Chi does not appear to be that movie… and no amount of propaganda or forthcoming claims of racism are going to change that.
