Mark Ruffalo on X

Hollywood actor and activist Mark Ruffalo is publicly sounding the alarm over the potential Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, stepping into the growing debate just as Netflix has exited the bidding war.

In a series of posts on X, Ruffalo urged state officials to intervene, responding directly to California Attorney General Rob Bonta as scrutiny around the possible media mega-merger intensifies.

Ruffalo Calls For State AG Intervention

Ruffalo did not mince words when reacting to the situation.

“Please let’s circle up all the State AG’s and talk about how this is going to kill competition in the industry and drive down wages, and product quality for consumers,” he said. “There are lots of agents in Hollywood who can tell you how past mergers and consolidations have hurt their clients and business. There is lots of talent that can tell you the same.”

His comments came amid reports that Netflix has formally stepped away from the bidding process after declining to match Paramount Skydance’s latest offer — a move that significantly reshaped the battlefield for control of Warner Bros. Discovery.

California AG Signals Active Review

Bonta quickly responded publicly, confirming that regulators are already watching closely.

“Mark, I hear you,” he said. “I’m in conversation with my AG colleagues about Paramount/Warner Bros. As the epicenter of the entertainment industry, California has a special interest in protecting competition.”

The statement reinforces that any potential deal would face heavy antitrust scrutiny, particularly given California’s central role in the entertainment business.

Ruffalo Doubles Down

Rather than letting the exchange fade, Ruffalo amplified the pressure in a follow-up message.

“Thank you @AGRobBonta,” he replied. “This is a great resource for people in California and other states who have skin in the game on these monopoly mergers. Time to wake up and fight.”

The language signals a coordinated activist push may be forming as the deal landscape evolves.

Political Undercurrents Emerge

Ruffalo has long been one of Hollywood’s most outspoken progressive voices, frequently weighing in on corporate and political issues. His intervention here comes as the Ellison family — which controls Paramount Skydance — has been publicly associated with donations to President Trump.

While Ruffalo did not mention the Ellisons directly in these posts, the political backdrop is difficult to ignore given the increasingly partisan climate surrounding major media consolidation.

The moment also follows Ruffalo’s recent public clash with Avatar director James Cameron, who previously warned that a Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. could be damaging to the theatrical movie business.

Media Control Concerns Linger

Another undercurrent in the debate is what a Paramount–Warner Bros. combination could mean for major news assets — particularly CNN.

If Paramount ultimately succeeds in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, the company would gain control of CNN, a network long criticized by opponents as leaning heavily toward Democratic Party narratives.

For progressive activists like Mark Ruffalo, the prospect of a major corporate reshuffling around CNN may carry additional political implications. Paramount Skydance leadership — particularly the Ellison family — has been publicly associated with more centrist and business-focused positioning in the media space.

Industry observers have speculated that Paramount ownership could push the network toward a broader middle-of-the-road posture in an effort to expand audience reach and advertiser confidence.

If that were to occur, it could represent a meaningful shift in the current cable news landscape — and may help explain why some voices on the Left are already urging regulators to take a hard look at the proposed merger.

What Happens Next

With Netflix now officially out of the running, Paramount Skydance appears to have the clearest path forward — but the regulatory gauntlet is only beginning.

State attorneys general, federal regulators, and industry stakeholders are all expected to weigh in heavily should a formal deal be announced. Whether Ruffalo’s public pressure campaign gains traction remains to be seen, but his intervention highlights just how politically charged the Warner Bros. endgame has become.

One thing is clear: the fight over Warner Bros. is no longer just a boardroom battle — it’s spilling fully into the public arena.
