NetEase is toughening penalties for abusive chat in Marvel Rivals. The developer is cracking down on so-called “toxic speech” in text and voice chat, with penalties that include mutes lasting up to a full year and long-term bans for the worst offenders.
In an announcement posted October 16, the team said it has “further escalated” its penalties for speech violations and will hand out “significantly harsher penalties” to players behind severe offenses or repeat violations. Punishments will be based on “the nature, severity, and historical record of the violation.”
The studio also launched a dedicated Moderation Policy page that spells out what’s banned, how it’s detected, and what happens to players who cross the line.
“We will absolutely not treat these behaviors as acceptable simply because they are unfortunately common in competitive gaming,” the announcement read.
According to the guidelines, the game uses a mix of automated detection, player reports, and manual review. The text system monitors chat in real time and goes beyond a basic word filter, analyzing meaning and context to catch insults, discrimination, threats, spam, and other abusive language before it escalates.

Voice chat is covered too. The system automatically checks the game’s voice channels, analyzing what players say and the context around it, so a penalty doesn’t depend on someone filing a report. NetEase says voice data is used “exclusively to recognize and handle rule violations.”
How NetEase Reviews Reports
Every week, the team uses verified reports to update its detection tools so they can pick up new slang and workarounds. Every flagged case, whether the system caught it or a player reported it, goes through manual review before a penalty lands.
Covered offenses include insults and belittling other players’ performance, discrimination and hate speech, doxxing, threats, and promoting illegal software or boosting services, according to Inven Global.
The Penalty Ladder
Penalties scale with how serious and how frequent the behavior is. Here’s how the guidelines break it down:
- Warning: A formal warning for inappropriate speech.
- Mute: Chat and voice bans that can last up to 365 days, depending on severity.
- Matchmaking restriction: Players with multiple violations get temporarily blocked from matches.
- Long-term account ban: For particularly severe or repeated offenses, a long-term suspension that keeps the player from logging in.
NetEase is still pushing players to use the in-game report tool, which works during a match or right after it. Every report gets logged and sent into the moderation workflow, according to the guidelines.

Player reaction has been mixed. Many on Reddit welcomed clear rules, while others want proof that long-term bans will actually be enforced, according to Inven Global. Some also pointed to earlier cases where the automated system muted players for mild profanity used in friendly ways, like praising a teammate.
Free to Play, Hard to Moderate
As a free-to-play competitive team game, Marvel Rivals has drawn criticism for players swearing over losses and for hateful abuse aimed at women and minority players who use voice chat, according to Inven Global. Some players have even circulated petitions asking for clearer reporting tools and stronger penalties.
NetEase called speech moderation “an ongoing, long-term commitment” and said it’ll keep refining how it identifies, reviews, and penalizes Marvel Rivals toxic speech.
Will yearlong mutes and long-term bans cut down on Marvel Rivals toxic speech, or will players find a way around them? Sound off and let us know!
