Mattel is continuing development of a live-action Polly Pocket movie, though writer-director Lena Dunham is no longer involved. The company confirmed the film remains in active development despite her departure.

Dunham Steps Away After Three Years

Dunham publicly disclosed in a New Yorker interview that she is no longer involved with the Polly Pocket movie. She had worked on the project for three years, completing a script. According to Dunham, she was unable to shape a version of the film that aligned with her creative standards.

She cited the success of Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, as a factor in her decision. Dunham noted that comparisons between the two projects would be unavoidable. She also said she might not be able to deliver a concept strong enough to stand apart.

In her words: “I don’t think I have that in me. I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket.”

A Mattel spokesperson confirmed the Polly Pocket movie is still in “active development” and expressed support for Dunham’s work.

Original Plans and Attachments

The Polly Pocket film was first announced in 2021, with Dunham slated to write, direct, and produce. Lily Collins was also attached at the time to star and co-produce.

Early descriptions suggested the story would follow a young girl who befriends a pocket-sized woman. The project was linked to MGM, which was later acquired by Amazon. That acquisition opened the possibility for Amazon to distribute or co-produce.

Mattel has remained active with Polly Pocket content. In September 2024, the animated special Polly Pocket: Adventures in Rio premiered on Amazon Prime Video. The 66-minute release shows that Mattel continues to expand the brand through media.

Mattel’s Strategic Moves

In mid-2025, Mattel announced that it would merge its television and film divisions into one. The unified group now operates under the name Mattel Studios. This new entity is tasked with leading the company’s entertainment efforts.

The live-action Polly Pocket movie remains part of Mattel Studios’ planned slate. That continued inclusion suggests the project is still a corporate priority, even after Dunham’s departure.

Recent Developments and Uncertainties

After Dunham stepped away, new details began to emerge. In October 2025, reports stated that Reese Witherspoon’s company, Hello Sunshine, had joined the project. Amazon MGM Studios was also reported to be involved.

According to the same report, Lily Collins remains attached as both star and producer. Writers Jordan Weiss and Dan Brier are said to be working on the screenplay.

However, Mattel and Amazon have not issued formal public confirmations. A director has not yet been announced. The film’s release strategy and production schedule remain unclear.

Implications of the Change

Dunham’s departure marks a significant creative shift. Her involvement gave the project early visibility, but it also brought heightened expectations. By stepping away, Dunham acknowledged the limitations she felt within the role. She indicated that the project needed a vision she could not confidently provide.

For Mattel and Amazon, her exit may allow for new creative approaches. They now have flexibility to reshape the film, choose different collaborators, or adjust the tone. Distribution could involve Amazon’s platforms or other channels.

Still, the film faces creative and commercial challenges. Adapting a toy property for modern audiences requires careful planning. The success of Barbie raised the bar for brand-based storytelling. It also increased scrutiny on future adaptations. The direction the Polly Pocket film will take—its tone, audience, and scope—remains uncertain.
