Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are returning to the country they publicly rejected—and repeatedly criticized—six years ago.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish a new home in Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, according to People. The family is expected to relocate later this month, allowing Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, to begin attending school in the United Kingdom in September.
The location of their new residence and the children’s school will remain private for security reasons. Harry and Meghan will not occupy a royal property, and the move will not restore their status as working members of the royal family.
They will also retain their mansion in Montecito, California, and vacation home in Portugal. Their long-term plans remain unclear, suggesting the move may represent an extended stay rather than a permanent departure from the United States.
The decision represents a remarkable reversal for a couple whose departure from royal life became one of the monarchy’s most damaging public controversies.
A Return After Years of Royal Criticism
Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in 2020 before moving to North America. They subsequently presented their side of the dispute through an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan, and Harry’s memoir, Spare.

Meghan told Winfrey that Harry had participated in conversations about how dark Archie’s skin might be. She also said the royal institution refused her request for help while she was experiencing thoughts of self-harm.
Meanwhile, Harry used Spare to disclose private family conflicts, including his allegation that Prince William physically attacked him during a 2019 argument. The memoir publicly exposed the depth of their estrangement and appeared to make reconciliation even more difficult.
The Sussexes’ American Reinvention Loses Momentum
However, life in the United States may not have worked out as well as the couple hoped.
Meghan has attempted to reinvent herself as a media and lifestyle personality, building a personal brand around cooking, gardening, and entertaining. Her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, proved deeply unpopular, with many observers suggesting that it attracted more “hate-watchers” than genuine fans.

In August 2025, Netflix converted its original overall deal with Harry and Meghan’s production company into a less expansive first-look arrangement.
Months later, the streamer announced that it had ended its partnership with the duchess’s As Ever lifestyle brand, which had launched 11 months earlier alongside her show. Additional reports alleged that Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos would no longer speak with Meghan unless a lawyer was present—an allegation her attorney strongly denied.
Taken together, the developments suggest that professional opportunities for the couple may be drying up.
No Return to Royal Duties
King Charles reportedly learned about the family’s plans on August 16 and welcomed the opportunity to spend more private time with his grandchildren. Archie and Lilibet recently visited the monarch for the first time in more than four years during a family trip to Britain.
However, the Sussexes should not expect to resume royal duties. Charles has reportedly made clear that they will remain private individuals and non-working royals—the arrangement established after their departure.
Harry is now expected to devote more time to British charities, including WellChild, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, and the Invictus Games. Meghan will continue operating As Ever from the couple’s international homes.

The return may create opportunities for reconciliation with Charles, but Harry’s relationship with William reportedly remains frozen. According to People, the brothers are still not communicating.
After spending years broadcasting their grievances with the monarchy to a global audience, Harry and Meghan are returning to its doorstep. Whether the move begins a genuine reconciliation—or merely opens another chapter in the royal feud—remains to be seen.
