Actress Michelle Hurd, who played Raffi in Star Trek: Picard, shared her thoughts that Star Trek: Legacy can be made “if the fans still want it.”

Speaking to TV Insider on the red carpet for Law & Order: SVU’s 25th season celebration, Hurd gave an update on the possibility of a Star Trek: Legacy show from showrunner Terry Matalas.

She said, “I love Raffi. She’s my favorite character. We have hands, fingers, everything’s crossed for Star Trek: Legacy.”

However, she noted that there are a number of other Star Trek shows in development ahead of any potential Star Trek: Legacy show, “I know that right now they’re working on Section 31 for Michelle Yeoh. And then they’re going to do Starfleet Academy. That’s going to be a series. And then if the fans still want it, they’ll start working on Star Trek: Legacy.”

Star Trek: Legacy appears to be a fan initiative to have Paramount create a show spinning out of Star Trek: Picard Season 3.

A Change.org petition started by The Popcast states, “We Want A Star Trek Legacy show Spinoff of Picard Season 3 with the wonderful characters that have been created and we would like Terry Matalas to be the Showrunner for this show wish (sp?) would continue the current events of Star Trek Picard Season 3.”

The petition adds, “This season has already set up the idea and characters to continue the story with a Next, Next Generation… with actors currently in Picard Season 3. With the name Star Trek Legacy, Terry Matalas would be able to build upon the themes already created in the Picard series and allow him to continue telling the Star Trek story moving into the 25th Century.”

Furthermore, the petition states, “We would like Paramount Studio Executives and Star Trek head Alex Kurtzman to pat themselves on the back for finding this talented Showrunner and give him more work! He wants to make more Star Trek, but for whatever reason, he is not yet set to make any new Star Trek after the Picard Series. He’s already set up a Crew that can continue pushing the Star Trek story forward.”

“Matalas has already told us, he set the ending of Picard season 3 to continue the Star Trek story in this Timeline,” it continues. “Please sign this petition so we can show Paramount how much we love his work and want more of it! Thank you!”

The petition has over 63,000 signatures.

Matalas previously commented on the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy telling SFX Magazine, “These shows are expensive to make. They currently have two shows, with Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy [beginning production in 2024] and I think Paramount would have to financially justify a third one. I think the way they look at it is that they’re well-stocked. So unless fans can convince them otherwise, that’s certainly the point of view at the moment.”

He also informed CinemaBlend, “I think Alex [Kurtzman] has a plan for the Star Trek universe and I think he has to figure out how all these things play out, right? I don’t think he wants to rush into anything. He’s got two great [live-action] shows happening right now, Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, and the Section 31 movie. So, you know, they’re pretty well stocked. At the same time, I think there’s a demand for this. I would say the fans should be loud and tell the world what they want. And maybe one day we’ll be able to do it…The fans are heard, but they should keep doing their thing.”

While Matalas appeared less than optimistic that Star Trek: Legacy might be a reality, he did inform Variety, “Alex and I talk all the time. If it’s something that’s going to be done, we want to make sure we don’t rush into it. We want to make sure we do it right. That’s where we’re at with it, I say coyly. At the moment, there’s nothing developed on it. But we talk all the time.”

Kurtzman also told Fox LA, “Anything is possible. We’ve heard the fans loud and clear. There’s obviously more story to tell. So, we’ll see.”

As for what Matalas has planned, he provided details to Collider, “I think I would want it right there with them. I think the idea of Captain Seven, Jack Crusher, Raffi as Number One, the La Forge sisters, and Esmar and [Mura], I would love to see the crew of that Enterprise out there as the next generation, mixed in with a lot of these legacy characters again. I think that they’ve never been better and more interesting.”

He also shared with Fox LA, “It’s about Seven of Nine. It’s about Jack Crusher. It’s about the La Forge sisters. It’s about what else is going on in the galaxy with the Deep Space Nine characters and the rest of the Voyager characters… Honestly, some of these [TNG characters], I’m not ready to say goodbye to. I think in a lot of ways, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, they’ve never been better. They are at the top of their game and I want to see more.”
