A new star may be stepping into the plague-ridden halls of Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic nightmare. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Bloody Disgusting, Mikey Madison (Scream, Anora) is now in talks to lead the upcoming film adaptation of The Masque of the Red Death, replacing Sydney Sweeney, who reportedly exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Initial details about the production emerged earlier this year, with reports describing the film as a “wildly revisionist and darkly comedic” reimagining of Poe’s 1842 short story. Now, with Mikey Madison reportedly set to portray dual roles as twin sisters, new plot details hint at a far more character-driven and visceral approach than previous adaptations.
A Tale of Twins and Tension
Rather than the original’s allegorical portrayal of death breaching aristocratic decadence, the new version reportedly introduces a pair of twin sisters separated by class. One sister, hidden among the impoverished lower class, is said to infiltrate the prince’s lavish stronghold—setting the stage for a collision between opulence and retribution.

This twist reframes Poe’s tale of social indifference and moral decay into a narrative of personal vengeance and duality. The symbolism of death remains intact, but rather than a silent, masked figure haunting a masquerade, it appears the story will be driven by human motivations—resentment, displacement, and blood ties fractured by privilege.
While Poe’s original focused on the inevitability of death and the futility of escaping fate, this adaptation seems poised to literalize that confrontation through interpersonal drama.
Casting Implications and Creative Direction
Madison’s potential involvement marks a significant tonal shift from the previously announced casting of Sydney Sweeney. Known for her intense, emotionally raw performances, Mikey Madison often portrays characters simmering with volatility just beneath the surface. Her dual role could allow for a dynamic range—balancing the controlled grace of the upper class with the raw fury of a forgotten twin returning from below.

Sweeney’s departure may hint at changes behind the scenes, but there’s no official word on whether the film’s direction has shifted or if the tone remains consistent with earlier descriptions. That said, the new casting information aligns with a different, more violent take on the source material—emphasizing not just the decay of privilege, but the eruption of justice from below.
Caution Behind the Camera
As reported in January, the film is being written and directed by Charlie Polinger, known for previous short films that push boundaries. His work (what little there is of it) explores extreme emotions and psychological unraveling. This is fairly fitting, given the grim decadence of Poe’s setting and the plague-ridden backdrop.

The story’s central themes—fear of death, denial of suffering, and the artificial walls built between rich and poor—remain highly relevant. But modernizing these elements with graphic decadence and character-driven revenge introduces a more aggressive, less metaphorical flavor. Longtime fans of Poe’s quiet horror may want to brace themselves.
Final Thoughts
While Madison’s casting is not yet finalized, her potential involvement speaks volumes about the film’s ambitions. Dual roles, class conflict, and personal revenge signal a transformation from atmospheric dread to something more chaotic and visceral. It won’t be the first time Poe has been adapted for the screen. However, this version may be one of the most radically reinterpreted yet.

Production is expected to begin late this year or early next. Whether this bold “revision” of a literary classic will resonate with audiences—or stray too far from its gothic roots—remains to be seen.

From Margot Robbie to Sydney Sweeney, and now to this Mikey Madison that I’ve never heard of.
ALL of them are AT BEST a 6/10, and that’s the truth. People need to realize there are Women WAY hotter who can’t Act and/don’t want to, so they stay away from Hollywood.
All you have to do is go to a Bar or Club in a City and you will see COUNTLESS Women who look just like them, and you will then realize how Average these Actresses are.
When a Crack Head Baby looking chick like Zendaya is drooled over, you know people have lowered their Standards A LOT.
Is this chick who’s claim to fame is that she starred in the Oscar winning pron movie?
If so, maybe her lack of inhibitions is the bigger tell for what the changes are about. Sweeny will show some, but this Ho3 will bare it all.
I’m sure the fact that she’s a member of Gee hyphen Dee’s chosen couldn’t possibly play a part in her nepotistic rise, especially after being in a propaganda piece showing all the goy women they too can find love after being a rampant whore didn’t get her where she is.
You some kind of Hamas terrorist? You sound like a Hamas terrorist. You should just post “ALLALALALALALALALALALALALALAHH!!” from now on; we’ll all get the point.
Is she pretty? Can’t tell. I had the benefit of seeing performances by a young Margaret Qualley as well as Sydney Sweeney in the only good movie in the past half decade or so, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. I know no other “newish” actress, other than in print.
