Sony has been on an absolute tear with their Marvel movies as of late. That seems to be coming to a pause with Morbius. Deadline is revealing that the CinemaScore (a mostly-industry-used statistic that measures early audience reception) is quite low:
All of this despite the fact that we had been hearing for weeks that Morbius was bound for a $50M opening on tracking. In the same breath, we had always heard throughout the pandemic (even when theaters were shut down) that Morbius wasn’t at the same quality level as other Sony/Marvel or Disney MCU titles. That said, with awful reviews at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, a C+ CinemaScore, and low Comscore PostTrak audience exits of 62% positive/47% recommend; everyone in the business should count their blessings with a $40M+ opening here. As of this minute, rival estimates aren’t expecting Morbius to fall apart tonight.
The lower projections for the box office are a negative signal. The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is almost meaningless as this point. But the CinemaScore being below a B is impressively bad. In fact, movies that you may have disliked in the past often scored higher in that rating. The PostTrak is also upside-down in the recommend category. In other words for Sony: not good. It could be that the lower weekend open for Morbius could turn into a steep drop-off over the next week or two. We’re not rooting for or against the film, even to the point that we don’t currently have a review scheduled for our site, but it does seem that audiences just don’t care for this latest Marvel entry.
