Movie Review: Jesus Revolution Is A Step Back In Time

Jesus Revolution was a shock to many in the movie industry. Faith-based films rarely pop so high as third-place, and Jesus Revolution even earning more per theater than Antman Quantumania certainly wasn’t a prior expectation.

My wife and I planned on a date night and we decided on going to see the movie Jesus Revolution. I had read part of the book last summer, so I had a pretty good idea about the theme of the movie. It’s a story by Pastor Greg Laurie about the Jesus Revolution back in the early 1970’s. I got to know a little about Pastor Greg Laurie and his wife Cathe when the pandemic hit in 2020. Our church, as many others did, closed down because of COVID-19. There were no on-line services until months later. I wanted to stay in The Word with other believers, so I turned to Pastor Greg Laurie’s online services. I really enjoy the way he talks about Jesus and The Holy Bible. He comes across as very sincere, warm and concerned about everyone’s spiritual life. I have continued to watch his services on Sunday, but I have now added listening to his podcasts. Again, I find him vey easy to listen to, almost like he’s a “father” figure sharing his wisdom with me.

After listening for several months, I started receiving books from Pastor Greg Laurie. One of those books was Jesus Revolution. The movie is a great representation of the book. I’ll try not to give away too much information so you can see it for yourself.

About The Movie

The movie is quite nostalgic as music from the era was played throughout many of the scenes. I thought there were several people that were focused on in the movie. One is Pastor Chuck Smith (played excellently by Kelsey Grammer), the pastor of Calvary Chapel and the person that took a chance on the hippie Jesus-lover Lonnie Frisbee ( played by The Chosen‘s Jonathan Roumie). Smith’s original church in Costa Mesa, California had a church of 25 members. He opened up his church and home to the hippie Jesus-lovers and his church grew exponentially.

Pastor Greg Laurie’s life is seen as a teenager coming to meet his future wife and the struggles he saw growing up. He has spoken many times on his relationship with his mother and to see it on the screen is heart-breaking. His mother was played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Yes the wife of Brad Paisley and the young lady that starred as the daughter of Steve Martin in Father of The Bride movie series.

Being an avid traveler, I seriously need to visit the Pirate Cove in southern California. This location has become the place of baptizing new believers. That’s how it was shown in the movie where folks were sitting amongst the rocks watching hundreds of people getting saved and being baptized. There has to be something extra special about this place.

There is a love story in this movie as we see Pastor Greg Laurie woo his future wife Cathe. Of course, it seemed she was wooing him in the early stages. They both have to work through typical relationship issues because of a lack of communication and having to deal with parental concerns of her future. Cathe’s parents didn’t see much in Greg’s future so they were concerned for their daughter. By the way, things worked out and they’ve been married almost 50 years now.

Rating

I love this movie. It’s quite touching and emotional in several scenes. If you can only put yourself in the positions of some of the characters, you can get emotional rather quickly. If you think of others that are battling or have battled drug addiction, you can get emotional. Overall, with the music, theme and characters, I give this a solid 9.

Let me know what your thoughts are on the movie if you’ve seen it. What do you think? Would you go see it again?
