According to an exclusive report from Variety, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani is set to lead the upcoming climate thriller Suffering Is Optional.

Production on the film is expected to begin in early 2027. Despite the disappointing box office performance of The Marvels, Iman Vellani said in early 2024 that she had “been assured” she would return as Ms. Marvel. Although she has not yet been confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars, the current production timeline could still leave room for Ms. Marvel to appear in the film.

A Climate Thriller With Psychological Horror Elements

Suffering is Optional is described as part psychological drama, part climate allegory, and part coming-of-age story. Iman Vellani will play a grieving drama student cast in the lead role of an India-set adaptation of Hamlet. While working under the pressure of a demanding director, she is “visited by the ghost of her deceased partner.” The ghost reportedly delivers a prophecy about the climate.

Screenwriter and director Zarrar Kahn has said he developed the script from firsthand accounts of climate disaster survivors. His feature film debut, In Flames, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. It was later selected as Pakistan’s official submission for the Academy Awards.

Filming for Suffering is Optional is being financed by Telefilm Canada and will take place in Hamilton and Montreal. Iman Vellani’s involvement signals a move away from Ms. Marvel and blockbuster franchises and toward smaller independent films.

Can Iman Vellani Rebound After The Marvels?

Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan was generally well received, though her Disney+ series Ms. Marvel struggled to attract a large audience. She was later considered one of the few bright spots in The Marvels, which grossed just $199.7 million worldwide. Even so, some fans who disliked the film have still expressed hope that her character will return in a future Marvel project.

Since stepping away from Marvel, Vellani voiced Puff and Tammy in the box office and critical disaster Animal Farm from Angel Studios. Whether Suffering is Optional revives her career remains unclear. Still, the film’s description suggests an arthouse festival project rather than a mainstream box office draw.

A Shift Away From Franchise Filmmaking

Whether Suffering is Optional becomes a breakout success or remains a niche festival release, the project marks a major turning point for Iman Vellani. After entering Hollywood through the massive machinery of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vellani now appears to be pursuing smaller and more challenging material. The film’s blend of psychological drama, climate anxiety, and supernatural themes suggests a project aimed more at critics and festival audiences than mainstream blockbuster crowds.

At the same time, the movie reflects a broader trend in modern filmmaking. More directors are using horror and psychological storytelling to explore fears surrounding climate change, social instability, and generational uncertainty. That approach may ultimately feed into the fears of younger audiences who increasingly see environmental collapse as part of everyday life rather than distant science fiction.

For Iman Vellani, the role could become an opportunity to prove herself outside of Ms. Marvel. Whether audiences embrace the project or not, Suffering is Optional signals an attempt to build a career beyond franchise entertainment.
