In these videos, several Muppet characters debate who will scream the loudest during the ride. This development comes on the heels of the closure of the long-running MuppetVision 3D attraction, a move that was met with criticism from some Disney park visitors and Muppet fans.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Muppets Overlay
The new Muppet-themed overlay for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, introduced as part of Disney’s efforts to refresh the attraction, places the characters in a high-energy coaster environment. The online videos feature the Muppets engaging in humorous discussions, primarily focusing on who will scream the loudest on the ride. This represents a different format from the former MuppetVision 3D attraction, shifting from a dedicated film experience to an integrated theme in an existing ride.

The overlay and videos mark an attempt to maintain a Muppet presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios following the closure of MuppetVision 3D. However, this new iteration does not involve the original Muppet performers, reflecting the broader shift in creative teams handling the franchise.

This change will signal the end of Aerosmith’s iconic music playing with this roller coaster, which has been playing since the ride opened in 1999. Guests could expect one of five songs to play when they rode: “Love in an Elevator,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way,” “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” and “Back in the Saddle.”
Closure of MuppetVision 3D
MuppetVision 3D, which opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1991, was a 3D film attraction featuring the Muppets in a short, immersive show. It was among the few attractions at Disney parks to prominently feature the talents of the original Muppet performers. The attraction closed permanently in 2025, ending more than three decades of operation. Although Disney did not provide extensive public reasons for the closure, it is widely understood to be part of ongoing efforts to update and reconfigure park attractions.

The closure sparked disappointment among many guests who valued MuppetVision 3D’s unique blend of puppetry, humor, and 3D effects. Some critics expressed that the attraction had become an important part of the park’s cultural fabric and was a rare example of Muppet-related content in the theme park environment.
Legacy of the Original Muppet Performers
MuppetVision 3D prominently featured the voices and performances of several original Muppet creators and performers. Jim Henson, the Muppets’ creator, was foundational in shaping the characters and their personalities. Additionally, MupperVision 3D was one of Henson’s last projects before he passed away in 1990. Frank Oz, who performed well-known characters such as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle, was integral to the attraction’s voice work. Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt also contributed voices and puppeteering for various characters. Steve Whitmire took on Kermit the Frog and other characters following Jim Henson’s death in 1990.

Since then, there have been significant changes in the personnel responsible for Muppet performances. Frank Oz has stepped away from performing most of his Muppet roles in recent years due to disagreements with Disney over the direction of the IP. Steve Whitmire was dismissed from his role as Kermit the Frog in 2017 after internal disagreements. In addition to Henson, Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt have also passed away. These changes mean that the original performers who helped define the Muppets are no longer involved in current theme park attractions or media.
Reception and Context
The decision to close MuppetVision 3D was met with notable dissatisfaction among some fans, who saw the attraction as a unique representation of the Muppets’ legacy at the parks. The move was also seen as removing one of the last remaining direct connections to the original Muppet creative team within Disney’s theme parks.

Meanwhile, the new online videos and coaster overlay represent a distinct strategy to incorporate the Muppets into the park in a more contemporary and ride-focused manner. This approach has prompted mixed reactions, with some viewers questioning whether the new content can capture the spirit of the original attraction.
Do you think the Muppets overlay of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will live up to its predecessor? Or did Disney mess with perfection when they axed Jim Henson’s final work? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
