Disney has announced the new theater show that will serve as the MuppetVision 3D replacement at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The production, titled “Welcome to Monstropolis,” will open in 2027 as part of the new Monsters, Inc.-themed land.

Disney announced the show on August 15, 2026, during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The announcement identified the production as the attraction planned for the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater. Disney had previously announced that a new theater show would be part of the Monstropolis project, but had not revealed its name or specific details.

New Show Will Feature Mike and Sulley

“Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike” will take place inside the Glob Theater. The theater will occupy the former Muppet*Vision 3D venue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The production will introduce human visitors to Monstropolis during H.U.M.A.N. Day, an event created for the new land. Disney says the occasion marks the first time humans have been welcomed into the monster city. The land’s story takes place after the events of Monsters, Inc., when monsters have moved away from using human screams as their main source of energy.

The theater show will serve as part of that welcome. Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, or Sulley, will introduce guests to Monstropolis and demonstrate the similarities between monsters and humans.

Sulley has prepared a small production for the occasion. Mike, however, wants to make the presentation bigger and add his own ideas. Recent descriptions of the show indicate that Mike has several surprises planned for the audience. The contrast between Sulley’s planned presentation and Mike’s additions provides the basic conflict for the theater production.

The company also has not announced the full cast of characters who will appear during the performance. However, the concept art includes several characters from the prequel, Monsters University, including Don and twins Terri and Terry. Details about the show’s effects, individual scenes and complete performance sequence remain limited.

The Glob Theater show will open as part of the first phase of Monstropolis in 2027. Disney plans to open the theater along with other parts of the land before the project’s suspended roller coaster.

Randy Newman Wrote an Original Song

The new theater production will feature an original song also titled “Welcome to Monstropolis.” Disney Legend Randy Newman wrote the song specifically for the production.

Newman wrote the music for Pixar’s 2001 film Monsters, Inc. He composed the film’s original score and also wrote “If I Didn’t Have You,” the song performed by Mike and Sulley. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002.

The new composition follows Newman’s long association with Pixar and Disney. In addition to Monsters, Inc., he has written music for several Pixar films, including Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 3. His work has earned multiple Academy Award nominations and wins.

Disney says “Welcome to Monstropolis” is the first song Newman has composed for a Disney theme park attraction. The song shares its title with the new Glob Theater production.

Monstropolis Will Replace Muppets Courtyard

Monstropolis will occupy the former Muppets Courtyard area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney announced the Monsters, Inc.-themed land in 2024 as part of the park’s ongoing expansion. MuppetVision 3D and PizzeRizzo closed as part of the redevelopment. MuppetVision 3D, Jim Henson’s last major project, welcomed its final guests on June 7, 2025, after more than three decades at the park.

The new land will include the Glob Theater and several dining and retail locations. Those locations include Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, Scareporium and Harryhausen’s Restaurant. Harryhausen’s will feature a new Audio-Animatronics figure based on the sushi chef from Monsters, Inc.

Monstropolis also will feature a suspended roller coaster based on the door vault from Monsters, Inc. Disney has described the attraction as the first suspended coaster at a Disney theme park. The ride will use a vertical lift system.

Disney expects portions of Monstropolis to open in 2027. The company has not announced a specific opening date for the land or the suspended coaster.

The Muppets Have a New Hollywood Studios Attraction

Although Muppet*Vision 3D has closed, The Muppets remain at Hollywood Studios through another attraction.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was converted into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. The attraction opened on May 26, 2026, and features The Electric Mayhem as part of its new storyline. Disney describes it as the first Disney attraction to feature The Muppets.

What Is Confirmed for 2027

Disney has confirmed that Monstropolis will begin opening to guests in 2027. The announced elements include the Glob Theater’s “Welcome to Monstropolis” show, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, Scareporium and Harryhausen’s Restaurant. The door-vault coaster remains part of the project, but Disney has not announced its opening date.

The announcement resolves the question of what will occupy the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater. The building will become the Glob Theater, where “Welcome to Monstropolis” will introduce visitors to the fictional city when the new land begins opening in 2027.
