Doctor Who actors Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson have both indicated in various interviews that they are already looking for new work after they finish filming the second season of their new Doctor Who series.
Gatwa informed Rolling Stone UK back in July 2023 he would be returning to the stage after Doctor Who, “[Theatre] kept me warm and it held me all night, even if I was broke. But I’m planning on getting back to it next year, after I finish season two of Doctor Who.”
As reported by Doctor Who TV, Gatwa also told Radio Times just last month that he has no plans following the second season of Doctor Who, “No idea, no plan. I just know that I’m loving it and my love for it is growing.”
As for Gibson, she informed Fabric Magazine what her plans for 2024 are, “I think, now that the strike’s over, probably auditioning again, for parts, and seeing what’s out there.”
“Every year has seen such change for me, it’s hard to think what might come next. I’d like to play a villain,” she added. “If not that I think I’m really intrigued by biopic roles that you really need to research. I think that would be a great challenge. I don’t know, I think I’m just excited to see what’s to come.”
While Gatwa and Gibson’s comments appear to indicate they might be out after the second season airs, series showrunner Russell T. Davies informed SFX Magazine via Games Radar that he’s already working on a third and fourth season.
He said, “I’m planning season 3 now, there’s plans for season 4.”
If Gatwa and Gibson’s tenure ends after the second season, Davies has already given himself an out to return to David Tennant with his canon-breaking bi-generation that he introduced in “The Giggle”
Basically, Tennant’s 15th Doctor is still running around albeit the show is not focusing on his story, only Gatwa’s 16th Doctor. If Gatwa and Gibson are out, it’s not out of the question to have the show focus on Tennant and introduce a new companion or have him team up with Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble again.
Nevertheless, Gatwa and Gibson’s tenure as Doctor Who and his companion Ruby Sunday is off to a rocky start. Their first standalone debut episode “The Church on Ruby Road” had the worst viewership of any episode that premiered a new Doctor except for the very first Doctor Who episode. However, that episode’s ratings were depressed due to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Not only did it have the second worst ratings for the debut of a new Doctor, it had the worst ratings for a Doctor Who Christmas special ever.
These poor ratings come amid the show promoting the objectively evil transgender ideology in the first of three 60th anniversary specials. The also attempted to normalize this ideology in “The Church of Ruby Road” by including a man playing a woman as a background character in “The Church on Ruby Road.”
