Netflix has reportedly removed its placeholder description for Gone with the Wind after the summary sparked major online backlash earlier this week.

On Tuesday afternoon, YouTuber Valliant Renegade posted a screenshot of Netflix’s landing page for the multi-Academy Award winning film. The description read: “A 1939 American Civil War epic known for its racism. To learn more about Black lives in America, search ‘Black Lives Matter.'”

The post quickly went viral as social media users searched for the title themselves to verify the description.
Netflix Quietly Removes Description
While Gone with the Wind is not currently available to stream on Netflix in the U.S., it is not uncommon for the platform to maintain landing pages for popular films. Because search engine results for the title direct viewers to HBO Max, where the film is available, it is unclear how long the description had been in place before attracting widespread attention.
Numerous social media users expressed outrage over the description. Elon Musk shared a post highlighting Netflix’s wording, commenting simply, “Needs to change.”

Others pointed out that Gone with the Wind remains historically significant because Hattie McDaniel became the first black performer to win an Academy Award for her role in the film.
A Film With a Long History of Debate
For nearly a century, film scholars have regarded Gone with the Wind as one of the greatest films ever made. In recent years, however, it has become the subject of renewed controversy over its portrayal of slavery and the antebellum South.

Following the death of George Floyd in 2020, HBO Max temporarily removed the film from its library. It was later restored with a five-minute introduction from TCM host Jacqueline Stewart. In the video, Stewart criticizes the film’s nostalgic depiction of the era while concluding, “Watching Gone With the Wind can be uncomfortable, even painful, still it is important that classic Hollywood films are available to us in their original form.”
Unlike Netflix’s previous placeholder text, summaries on HBO Max, Hulu, and Prime Video focus primarily on the film’s story. Some viewers have also reported that Gone with the Wind opens with a historical disclaimer acknowledging that it is a “product of its time.”
Critics Say Netflix Crossed the Line
Many critics argued that Netflix’s description went beyond providing historical context and crossed into editorial commentary. The suggestion that viewers search for Black Lives Matter, a controversial advocacy organization, drew particular criticism. Rather than presenting the landmark film and allowing audiences to form their own conclusions, critics argued that Netflix was encouraging a modern ideological interpretation before viewers even pressed play.

The controversy also arrived the same week Warner Bros. announced a new 4K restoration of the film, scheduled for release in November. As concerns about the future of physical media continue to grow—and as some collectors worry that digital versions of classic films could eventually be altered or reframed—many classic film enthusiasts viewed Netflix’s description as another reason to invest in physical releases.
The Debate Isn’t Going Away
For now, Netflix appears to have quietly distanced itself from the controversy by removing the description for Gone with the Wind altogether.

Ultimately, Gone with the Wind has stood the test of time. Debate over its place in American film history will likely continue, but the story of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler remains one of Hollywood’s most influential and enduring works.
