Netflix’s sweeping executive shakeup has claimed another major Hollywood figure, with film chairman Dan Lin dismissed after just two and a half years overseeing the streaming giant’s movie operations. His removal comes amid broader changes to the company’s entertainment leadership, although new reporting suggests problems surrounding Greta Gerwig’s expensive Narnia adaptation may have contributed to the decision.

According to an October 19 Variety report, Lin was fired over the weekend, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that began in April 2024.

The executive, whose producing credits include The LEGO Movie, It, and the Sherlock Holmes films, was originally recruited to overhaul Netflix’s approach to original filmmaking.

His mandate was straightforward: produce fewer movies, exercise greater financial discipline, and improve the overall consistency of Netflix’s film slate.

Now, with Lin departing and several other senior executives already gone, Netflix finds itself rebuilding much of its entertainment leadership.

Netflix’s Executive Restructuring Claims Another Major Figure

Lin’s firing follows an extraordinary period of corporate restructuring at Netflix.

The company recently eliminated approximately 1,000 positions, while chief content officer Bela Bajaria was replaced by former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice.

Rice is scheduled to assume his new position on October 26, overseeing Netflix’s global content operations.

The leadership changes come as the company faces growing pressure to justify its substantial entertainment spending.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Netflix’s viewing hours increased just 2% during the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, despite an 11% increase in content spending.

That spending reportedly reached approximately $20 billion, raising questions about whether Netflix’s expanding investment in entertainment is delivering sufficient audience growth.

Lin’s strategy represented an attempt to address those concerns by reducing production volume and emphasizing more selective investments.

However, that approach reportedly generated disagreements with several prominent filmmakers.

Director David Fincher allegedly encountered resistance over requests for additional photography on The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, while reports also suggested tensions involving Ben Affleck. Affleck’s representatives disputed claims of a deteriorating relationship with Netflix.

Those reported disputes provide context for another controversy that has emerged following Lin’s dismissal.

Jeff Sneider Reports Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Played a Role

Entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider claims the troubled production of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew contributed to Lin losing his position.

“Lin was fired over the weekend and im told that NARNIA was a factor,” Sneider wrote on social media following the announcement.

The claim follows earlier reporting about disagreements between Lin and Gerwig concerning the direction of the approximately $280 million fantasy production.

Lin reportedly expressed concerns about the film and offered extensive notes during postproduction. Gerwig allegedly resisted his involvement, with the disagreement eventually reaching Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos through her representatives at Creative Artists Agency.

According to those accounts, arrangements were subsequently made to minimize direct interactions between Lin and Gerwig.

The reported dispute coincided with allegations that early screenings of Narnia had generated disappointing reactions.

An October 14 World of Reel report cited sources describing the unfinished film as “awful” and “a genuine problem.”

Additional photography was reportedly undertaken to address concerns about the production.

Netflix has not confirmed that Narnia contributed to Lin’s firing, and the reported screening reactions remain unverified accounts from anonymous sources.

Nevertheless, Sneider’s assertion introduces a potentially significant explanation for why the executive’s tenure ended so abruptly.

A Difficult Transition for Netflix’s Film Division

Lin’s dismissal leaves Netflix facing questions about the future direction of its movie operations.

The company must balance demands for tighter production budgets with the expectations of established filmmakers, many of whom have become accustomed to considerable creative freedom and substantial financial backing.

That challenge becomes particularly complicated when projects such as Gerwig’s Narnia carry budgets approaching $300 million.

The film is currently scheduled for a February 12, 2027, theatrical release, followed by its Netflix debut on April 2.

Although its eventual reception remains uncertain, the reported difficulties surrounding the production have become part of a much larger story about Netflix’s management of expensive original films.

Lin was hired to bring greater discipline to those operations. Less than three years later, he is leaving amid a corporate restructuring, reported filmmaker disagreements, and allegations that one of the company’s biggest upcoming releases contributed to his dismissal.

Whether Narnia was a decisive factor remains unconfirmed. What is clear is that Netflix’s latest leadership overhaul represents another significant change in how the streaming giant intends to manage its multibillion-dollar entertainment business.
