New Connections Cafe Artwork at Epcot is Fantastic

Recent Instagram posts by Disney Parks Imagineer Zach Ridley have shed significant light on the Connections Cafe coming to Epcot. Though The Walt Disney Company and the Disney Parks have come under significant fire as of late, not all is lost. Good things are still happening, often coming from hundreds and thousands of employees who want no part in the craziness that is swirling around them. So whoever is behind some of the artistic decisions for Connections Cafe… that person is a good thing happening at TWDC. Whether it is the mural hearkening back to the original Epcot vision or the flooring which matches with Walt’s prototype city of tomorrow layout, all of this is inspired product.

To celebrate the recent menu reveal of Connections Eatery on @disneyparks , I’m excited to share even more behind-the-scenes details of this beautiful space at EPCOT. Adding to the park’s rich legacy of original art displays, our team produced a hand-painted mural that stretches over 160 feet along the back wall of Connections Eatery!

This original piece, titled “Global Gathering,” is a celebration of various food and beverage staples from around the world, and how we are all connected by enjoying a meal together. Highlighting eight distinct regions of the globe, this vibrant installation depicts people cultivating or gathering around food, such as potatoes from the Andes Mountains in Peru or black pepper from the Malabar Coast of India. The piece also evolves from sunrise in the east to sunset in the west across the full span of the eatery – culminating in one of the largest art installations Imagineering has created. That scale and stunning vibrancy celebrates global diversity with a simple, universal concept: the moments we have in common around food, meals, traditions and memories.

The creative concept for this piece was developed over the last few years, with consultants from around the world. It was then hand-painted in a series of panels and recently installed by our site teams at EPCOT. Here we see Abdul from our Character Paint team, working alongside a team of artisans to provide final touch-ups in the field.

Seeing this stunning mural come to life and now find its home in EPCOT speaks to the global story of connection that’s always been at the heart of this unique park.

EPCOT is full of iconic shape language that evokes grand ideas about cities, innovation and the potential for design to make the world a better, more integrated place. These iconic EPCOT designs were evident as far back as Walt’s original site plans for the Florida project, where EPCOT was to serve as the literal and conceptual “center” of Walt Disney World, where one could live, learn and experience innovations that would later come to define everyday life as we know it.

EPCOT has never stopped evolving – what Walt foresaw as a constant “state of becoming.” To this day, Imagineers continue to draw inspiration from those original concepts and ideas for the park throughout the current transformation.

Today I’m proud to reveal a pretty cool example of this, in its own state of becoming as we speak.

In the new Connections Café and Eatery, guests will discover detailed flooring designs (yes, more flooring ?) that pay homage to the radial layout and celebrate the purposeful geometry and organic symmetry of EPCOT. As you swipe here, you can see various stages of the process, from the linework to a near-finished product just prior to its final buffing.

These designs are created with a sustainable bio-polymer material which is 3-D printed to provide an intricate template. That linework is then laid out by skilled craftspeople to create inlays in the poured flooring material, with the final design revealed through rounds of sanding and buffing, where classic and cutting-edge techniques meet.

We have many more details like this our team is hard at work completing in time for our opening later this spring.

Congratulations to the Imagineers and artisans who have brought such beauty into existence. If the culinary team is as successful, Connections Cafe will be an astounding addition to the old Future World… and dare we say a major plus over the Electric Umbrella?

Best of all, when all the dust settles, and hopefully Disney World is outside of any conflict or drama, there will be a beautiful dining area for years and years to come.
