New ‘God of War’ Game Starring Kratos Announced After Fan Backlash Over ‘God of War: Laufey’

Sony Santa Monica appears to be trying to reassure God of War fans that Kratos isn’t going anywhere.

During the God of War: Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio confirmed that a brand-new God of War game starring Kratos is now in development, just weeks after revealing God of War: Laufey, the upcoming entry that shifts the spotlight away from the franchise’s iconic protagonist and instead follows Faye, Kratos’ late wife.

For many longtime fans, that announcement may come as a relief.

Sony’s God of War: Laufey Reveal Divided Fans

When Sony unveiled God of War: Laufey during its June State of Play presentation ahead of Summer Game Fest, the response was immediately polarizing.

Rather than continuing Kratos’ story—or even following Atreus after the events of God of War Ragnarök—the new title focuses on Faye (Laufey), exploring her journey through the afterlife after her death prior to the events of God of War (2018).

Many fans immediately questioned why Sony would sideline Kratos, the face of the series since the original God of War launched in 2005.

After nearly two decades of building one of gaming’s most recognizable protagonists, many players simply weren’t interested in a mainline entry that leaves him on the sidelines.

Comic-Con Brings Good News for Kratos Fans

Thankfully for those fans, Comic-Con delivered a much different announcement.

During the God of War: Laufey panel, Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog confirmed that another God of War game is officially in development with Kratos returning as the playable protagonist.

Barlog reportedly explained that the new game will connect directly to God of War: Laufey, suggesting the two projects are part of a larger overarching narrative rather than completely separate stories.

Unfortunately, that’s about all fans know for now.

Sony offered no gameplay footage, no title, no release window, and very few story details beyond confirming Kratos’ return.

Why This Announcement Makes Sense

The announcement comes after weeks of discussion surrounding God of War: Laufey and whether Sony was preparing to move beyond Kratos entirely. Even players who were willing to give Faye’s story a chance expressed concern that the franchise’s legendary Ghost of Sparta had effectively been retired.

By confirming another Kratos-led game before Laufey even launches, Sony has largely neutralized those fears.

It also creates a strong incentive for longtime fans to play God of War: Laufey. If the events of Faye’s story directly set up Kratos’ next adventure, then skipping it may mean missing important context before the franchise’s next major installment.

From a business standpoint, it’s a smart move.

Rather than asking fans to abandon Kratos, Sony is framing Laufey as an important chapter in a larger saga.

Where Does Kratos Go Next?

The biggest mystery now is where Kratos’ story heads after God of War Ragnarök.

The Norse mythology storyline concluded with Ragnarök, seemingly bringing that chapter of Kratos’ life to a close. Over the years, fans have speculated that the franchise could move into Egyptian mythology, something Santa Monica Studio has openly discussed exploring in the past. Other possibilities include Celtic, Slavic, or even Japanese mythology.

There’s also unfinished business within the Norse world.

Kratos ended Ragnarök embracing a new vision of himself as a god worthy of worship rather than fear. Meanwhile, Atreus departed to search for the remaining Giants alongside Angrboda, leaving plenty of story threads available if Santa Monica wants to revisit them.

Whether Kratos remains in Midgard or embarks on an entirely new mythological journey remains unknown.

Sony Still Has Questions to Answer

Announcing another Kratos game certainly helps calm concerns surrounding God of War: Laufey, but it doesn’t automatically erase skepticism surrounding the decision to temporarily move away from the franchise’s defining character.

For many fans, Kratos is God of War. Asking players to wait through an entirely separate title before returning to him was always going to be a difficult sell.

Now that Sony has confirmed Kratos will return, however, God of War: Laufey feels less like a permanent changing of the guard and more like an expansion of the universe surrounding one of gaming’s most beloved characters.

Whether that strategy ultimately pays off will depend on whether Laufey proves to be a compelling story in its own right—and whether Santa Monica Studio can deliver another unforgettable adventure once Kratos finally picks up the Blades of Chaos again.
