With just a few months until its Christmas Day release, HBO is ramping up the marketing for its new Harry Potter series.
The latest trailer reintroduces the wizarding world and a new cast portraying its beloved characters. However, it also highlights some of the creative choices that deviate from J.K. Rowling’s novels and the earlier film adaptations. While some of those changes will likely raise concerns among longtime fans, the new show will undoubtedly attract massive viewership and become a topic of discussion—and debate—for years to come.

Expanding Beyond Harry’s Perspective
Opening with narration from the famous Sorting Hat Ceremony, Professor McGonagall reads off the names of the Golden Trio as they appear on screen.
Hermione is shown on the Hogwarts Express, looking crestfallen as she learns that no one else did the summer reading.

The trailer then shifts to the Weasley family’s dinner table, where Ron receives his letter.

Finally, Harry’s name is read. Dumbledore watches closely as Harry lifts the hat and begs not to be placed in Slytherin.

Book readers will immediately spot the significance of Ron’s scene. Because the novels largely adhere to Harry’s limited third-person perspective, audiences rarely witness events outside his presence. This small addition signals a broader scope that could explore previously unseen corners of the timeline. A fleeting glimpse of James and Lily Potter sprinting across a golden bridge further fuels speculation that flashbacks will provide additional narrative ground.
A Familiar Hogwarts With Some Major Changes
For the most part, the new trailer is easily identifiable as the world of Harry Potter. Key moments, including wizard’s chess and Quidditch matches, are shown in quick glimpses, promising viewers that little of importance will be left out. While the whimsical score John Williams composed for the films is being left behind, the new music from Hans Zimmer and his Bleeding Fingers collective seems to capture the spirit of Hogwarts.

As far as the cast is concerned, everyone from McGonagall and Dumbledore to Hagrid and the main trio is instantly recognizable. That familiarity is clearly intentional, giving audiences recognizable versions of the characters even as the series distinguishes itself through new performances, expanded storylines, and a different visual identity.
However, the trailer does not shy away from acknowledging the creative team’s most controversial casting decision.

Paapa Essiedu appears in two scenes as Potions Master Severus Snape. The character was vividly described by Rowling and memorably portrayed by Alan Rickman, which only draws further attention to the fact that the television series has chosen a jarringly different depiction.
HBO Is Betting Fans Will Embrace a Different Harry Potter
Revisiting a franchise as iconic as Harry Potter was always going to invite intense scrutiny, but this latest look shows a production willing to take calculated risks. By fleshing out unseen corners of the wizarding world and taking fresh creative swings with established lore, the series aims to justify its existence beyond mere nostalgia.
Whether purists embrace these changes or resist them, the trailer confirms that HBO is building an ambitious, expansive adaptation. When Christmas Day arrives, all eyes will be on Hogwarts once again.
