Disney has taken another step forward in the expansion of Magic Kingdom in Orlando. Walt Disney Imagineering has filed permits for the construction of two new buildings at the STOLport site near Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. This development is part of the ongoing preparations for the park’s upcoming Cars and Villains-themed expansions.
The permit, identified as “Project K,” was submitted to the South Florida Water Management District and outlines infrastructure improvements to support these projects.
Permit Details and Infrastructure Plans
The permit application includes plans for new parking areas, sidewalks, utilities, and drainage systems. Modifications to two existing retention ponds are proposed: one would be converted into a dry detention pond, and the other into a wet detention pond. The changes outlined in these Disney World permits aim to manage stormwater effectively during construction.

The permit also has plans for changed structures to support the new water drainage set-up. It’s valid until March 31, 2027, indicating a long-term commitment to the site’s development.
Additionally, the old STOLport area is set to have two new support buildings. The planned location is off of World Drive to the east of Magic Kingdom.
Role of STOLport in Disney’s Expansion
STOLport, originally an airstrip for short takeoff and landing aircraft, has been repurposed over the years to serve as a staging area for various Walt Disney World projects.

It has supported developments such as New Fantasyland and TRON Lightcycle Run. The current expansion at STOLport reflects Disney’s ongoing efforts to enhance Magic Kingdom. These planned buildings will likely continue STOLport’s usage as a backstage support area to Disney’s projects.
Cars-Themed Expansion
The Cars-themed area is set to replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America in Frontierland.

Dubbed Piston Peak National Park, the new area will feature two attractions: an off-road rally race ride and a family-friendly attraction. The design draws inspiration from national parks, particularly the Rocky Mountains, and aims to integrate seamlessly with the existing park environment.
Villains-Themed Land
Beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a new land themed around Disney villains is planned. While specific details remain limited, concept art suggests the inclusion of elements like Maleficent’s castle and her dragon form.

The land is expected to offer two major attractions, along with dining and shopping experiences. Several of Disney’s iconic villains, such as Gaston, Jafar, and Scar, will also make their appearances in some fashion.
Environmental Considerations
Disney has faced environmental scrutiny regarding the expansions. In December 2024, the South Florida Water Management District returned Disney’s initial permit application for the Cars-themed area, requesting additional information on stormwater management and wetland impacts.

Disney was granted an extension to submit the required details, including maps of current wetland conditions and mitigation plans.
Conclusion
The filing of these Disney World permits for new buildings at STOLport marks a significant step in developing Magic Kingdom’s Cars and Villains-themed expansions.
