The official trailer for James Gunn’s Superman has finally landed—and with it, a tidal wave of analysis, speculation, and renewed concern from longtime DC fans. With bright visuals, fast-paced action, and an intense focus on morality in a complicated world, the trailer suggests that Superman might deliver something epic. But beneath the surface, not everyone’s convinced.

A First Look at the Story

The trailer opens with a quiet, seemingly routine interview between Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Clark Kent as Superman (David Corenswet). At first, Kent looks like he expects softball questions. But things turn fast. Lois presses him hard about an incident where Superman intervened in a foreign conflict to stop a war. Her line of questioning draws attention to international borders, governmental overreach, and whether Superman is operating as an agent of the United States.

Superman Angry

Superman’s frustrated response—“People were going to die!”—seems to reflect the central theme of the movie: what it means to do the right thing, regardless of red tape, geopolitics, or public opinion.

This is a Superman torn between idealism and realism, between personal morality and the complicated nature of a modern, global society.

High Stakes, High Action

The trailer doesn’t skimp on spectacle. Superman is shown battling multiple villains, including one mysterious adversary who may be the long-rumored Ultraman—a clone or dark mirror of the Man of Steel. That hasn’t been confirmed, but the imagery certainly points to a powerful enemy capable of matching Superman blow for blow.

We also see Jonathan and Martha Kent alive and well—something that long-time fans of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman will appreciate. Their inclusion hints at a more emotionally grounded take on Clark’s human upbringing.

Superman and parents

Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, looms large over the trailer with a chilling declaration:

“He’s not a man. He’s an it.”

It’s a sharp line that reflects the modern Lex: suspicious of power, obsessed with control, and willing to vilify anyone who stands outside of human authority—no matter how noble.

A Colorful, Classic Visual Style

One thing that can’t be denied: this film looks like a Superman movie. The colors pop. The costume is vibrant (though many take exception with the actual design). The action is framed with comic-book energy that feels both nostalgic and modern. It’s a major departure from the muted palettes of the Snyderverse and could signal a tonal shift many fans have been craving.

But while the trailer’s surface is shiny, fans are still uneasy about what lies beneath.

The Growing Fan Concerns

As we’ve covered here at That Park Place, this trailer doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It arrives amid a storm of fan concern over the direction of the film—and James Gunn’s approach to the character.

Here’s a recap of the most troubling points raised in recent weeks:

  • #SuperSh** and Online Trolls: A leaked plot point reported that Superman would be frustrated by online hate, specifically from a hashtag campaign criticizing his actions. Lex Luthor is said to deploy mutant monkeys to flood the internet with anti-Superman propaganda. This left fans questioning whether Gunn was using the film to take shots at critics and social media culture.
  • Trailer Clark: Gunn confirmed that his version of the Kent family lives in a converted double-wide trailer. While some viewed this as grounding the character in realism, others saw it as a needless departure from Superman’s classic Americana imagery.
  • Creature Commandos Echoes: Gunn has already faced criticism for inserting agenda-driven messaging into Creature Commandos, including the now-infamous “Incel army” subplot. Fans worry similar tactics might resurface in Superman.
Superman and Krypto

These concerns have snowballed online, especially in the wake of Gunn’s continued interactions with fans on Threads, where his tone and choices have sometimes added fuel to the fire.

Will the Film Rise Above the Noise?

On paper, this could be a great movie. The tone is emotional. The visuals are energetic. The premise is rich with potential. And David Corenswet’s Superman seems to be a hero wrestling with moral clarity in a morally gray world.

But the outside noise hasn’t gone away. Gunn’s baggage from previous controversies, his aggressive online presence, and the early script leaks have all cast a shadow over what could be DC’s most important film in a decade.

The Superman trailer is a step in the right direction. Now the question is whether the final product will embrace timeless storytelling—or get tangled up in a web of modern-day messaging.

Superman hits theaters July 11, 2025.

Up, up out of your seats and away from the movie theater!

Don’t know why people have any faith in Gunn. He’s a clown who will turn everything into a joke.

devilman013

Agreed. He can’t help himself.

Nothing about this movie is attractive. Characters, seeming atmosphere, characters, dumb dog. Pa Kent? What a slap in the face to every inspiring character ever created. That representation by a hulking misanthropic white trash mentor single handily chang e me from not caring about this piece of zhit, to actively rooting against it, gunn, dc, and zaslav the way I do for marvel, et. all. I hope they receive comeuppance.

devilman013

I don’t know about anyone else, but that interview scene didn’t sit quite right with me.
