On Monday, September 17, 2025, President Donald J. Trump filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida against the New York Times, four of its reporters, and Penguin Random House.
Allegations against the Times from the suit state that the paper “continued spreading false and defamatory content about President Trump,” and that they omitted recognition that Trump “secured the greatest personal and political achievement in American history” in his November 2024 Presidential election win.

The specific reporters from the Times named as defendants in the case are Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker and Michael S. Schmidt.
Not Just A Newspaper, But A Book As Well
President Trump is also suing publisher Penguin Random House for alleged defamation he claims is found in their book Lucky Loser authored by New York Times investigative reporters Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig, published by Penguin Press in September 2024.

Trump alleges passages in the book were misrepresentations that harmed his reputation. He also claims the false information caused significant financial losses.
Not the First Rodeo for Trump and The New York Times
Tensions between Trump and The New York Times go back a ways. Trump has frequently criticized the newspaper for its coverage of him, often calling it a “failing newspaper” and “fake news.” There have been several legal disputes and threats of lawsuits over the years, although not all of them have materialized into formal cases.
There was also a lawsuit in 2020 when Trump’s legal team sued the Times. The suit accused the Times of defamation over a March 2019 op-ed by Max Frankel suggesting Trump and Russia had a quid-pro-quo relationship. It was ultimately dismissed in 2021.
In President Trump’s own announcement of the lawsuit on his social media platform truth social on Monday he wrote:
“Today, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times, one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the History of our Country, becoming a virtual “mouthpiece” for the Radical Left Democrat Party. I view it as the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER. Their Endorsement of Kamala Harris was actually put dead center on the front page of The New York Times, something heretofore UNHEARD OF! The “Times” has engaged in a decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole. I am PROUD to hold this once respected “rag” responsible, as we are doing with the Fake News Networks such as our successful litigation against George Slopadopoulos/ABC/Disney, and 60 Minutes/CBS/Paramount, who knew that they were falsely “smearing” me through a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration, which was, in effect, a malicious form of defamation, and thus, settled for record amounts. They practiced this longterm INTENT and pattern of abuse, which is both unacceptable and illegal. The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW! The suit is being brought in the Great State of Florida. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
-President Donald Trump
Just today, September the 17th, 2025 he followed up another truth social post.
“I am getting amazing feedback on my Lawsuit against The New York Times,” Trump said. “The predominant feeling and sentiment is, “IT’S ABOUT TIME!” The case was filed in the Great State of Florida! The Radical Left Media is working hard to destroy the U.S.A. We are going to stop them at each and every level!”
President Trump Vs. The New York Times Vs. We The People
The New York Times denies every allegation in the lawsuit claiming that it lacks merit and is essentially an attempt to stifle independent journalism.
They emphasized their commitment to journalistic freedom and the First Amendment. The publisher, Penguin Random House, also expressed confidence in the accuracy of their reporting and stood by its authors.

For the public, the case demonstrates the tension between political figures and major news organizations. Voters rely on accurate reporting when evaluating candidates for public office, and the lawsuit raises questions about whether The New York Times’ coverage met that standard. As a publication that presents itself as an objective news source, the Times now faces scrutiny over how its reporting is perceived and whether it may have influenced public opinion.
The lawsuit contends that the Times went beyond factual reporting, and Trump argues that this misrepresentation could have shaped public perception. Because many voters rely on outlets like the Times when forming opinions, the accuracy of such coverage carries significant weight.
An Outcome That Means More Than Money
President Trump is not the first to criticize The New York Times, a publication that has faced disputes with political figures across the spectrum. The case touches on the balance between press freedom — a cornerstone of American society — and the responsibility of news organizations to report accurately. U.S. law draws a clear line: if reporting contains false statements presented as fact and they can be proven to be knowingly false, that constitutes libel.

With candidates for public office, coverage that is alleged to be misleading can potentially influence voter perception and decision-making. While Trump is seeking $15 billion in damages, the broader question centers on accuracy in journalism and its impact on both individuals and the public at large.

“He’S a FaScIsT fOr SuInG oVeR lIbEl!” – literally several deranged liberals commenting on NY Post articles
I hope he wins or gets such a massive settlement the Times finally starts reining in their “journalists.” He’s not suing as POTUS but as a private citizen who has every right to do so. Especially Penguin which published that book when he was not in office. Libel, slander, and fomenting of violence are not protected by 1A. A lot of people on the Left and Right either fail to realize that or ignore it to justify spewing their own hateful rhetoric. Then there’s Bondi who proved she doesn’t know it at all…
This is something that should result in Impeachment, and I voted for him.
He is violating the 1st Amendment, which is an Absolute. I don’t care what Unconstitutional Laws Traitors have made in the past, they deserve the Death Penalty for passing them.
I like his Policies obviously, but ANY Politician who violates the Constitution deserves to be fired AT LEAST. That includes 99.99999% of the Left obviously, and most of them deserve the Death Penalty for how many times they did it.
Anyone championing this is a Leftist and the Enemy…………..
You’re saying that under the presumption the media that routinely lies is telling the truth this time.
-Kimmel was a quid pro quo mockingbird.
-his ratings were in the dumpster.
-multiple ABC affiliates refused to broadcast his show because of his comments nationwide.
-he was a liability at this point and not worth any lawsuits.
I agree in principle but these people used the Constitution to protect themselves and as a skirt to hide behind while stripping it from the rest of us.
They work for foreign powers to advance an agenda that was never asked for much less voted for, so if anything they should be treated on par with anyone committing espionage and sabotage with their silent weapons for a quiet war.
It is good to have free speech, but there must be some accountability for spoken/written words. Is it free speech if I say that Hitler was right and to praise his policies ???? There are some moral boundaries even in free speech that should not be crossed.
