Actor Nick Offerman recently criticized his fellow actor and Sovereign co-star Dennis Quaid over his public support for Donald Trump. Offerman described Quaid as “crazy” for not keeping his political views private. He made the remarks during an appearance on the podcast Lovett or Leave It.
Offerman discussed his experience working with Quaid on Sovereign. He said Quaid did not openly discuss his political beliefs during filming. According to Offerman, Quaid became more vocal about his support for Trump after production ended in 2024. He described that shift as unexpected.
In the interview, Offerman said Quaid “kept it under wraps until just last year.” He suggested that Quaid’s political stance became more visible through media appearances and public statements. Offerman also pointed to Quaid’s activities outside of acting. These included interviews and music projects that reflected his views.
Offerman’s Comments
Offerman described Quaid as, “He unfortunately is a crazy Trump guy with a Gospel record.”
He went on to say “Right after we finished the movie, he suddenly came out with a Gospel country record and went on Tucker Carlson and f***ing Hannity to, like, play his Trump Gospel songs. And we were like, ‘What?’ He’s a hero of my life, I’ve looked up to him. He’s a great actor,”
Offerman has addressed this topic before. In earlier comments, he said he preferred to avoid political arguments with colleagues.

In comments Offerman made last year on working with Quaid for Sovereign, he said, “So I am not going to pick an argument with Dennis Quaid over our political leanings because I’m going to shake his hand and try to make a great film.”
He went on to say, “Dealing with Trump supporters in the world is something I try to handle with nuance, because I know many others around the states who are very good people and citizens and would give you the shirt [off] their back. They are on the receiving end of an absolute firehose of misinformation, so it’s really cognitively dissonant (impossible) to engage in rational discourse.”
Quaid’s Views
Quaid has spoken openly about his support for Trump in recent years. In a conversation last month with Pastor Greg Laurie, he described Trump as “really genuine” and “surprisingly approachable.” He went on to say, “He wouldn’t be president if he wasn’t genuine because people, the people who voted for him, know that he has their best interest at heart, that he is a genuine person.”
The actor went on to describe his own political stances.
“I’m a common-sense independent myself,” Quaid said. “I think I lean more conservative in my head. But I’m just for common sense. It’s really what I am.”
Also, Quaid did release his first Gospel record in 2023, called Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners. The album included Gospel staples such as “Amazing Grace” and “Just as I Am.” Quaid also wrote several original songs, including “Fallen” and “Please Don’t Give Up on Me.”
Broader Industry Context
The exchange between Nick Offerman and Quaid reflects wider political divisions in Hollywood regarding Trump. Public figures increasingly share their views on political issues. These statements sometimes lead to disagreements among colleagues.
In this case, Offerman’s comments highlight two perspectives. He criticized Quaid’s openness while at the same time being incredibly open about his liberal politics. He also emphasized the need for professionalism, suggesting that political differences should not disrupt collaboration on a project.
Offerman’s comments stand in contrast to what many conservatives in Hollywood have experienced.

Actor Jon Voight – YouTube, Sky News Australia
Actor Jon Voight has been one of the most visible conservative voices in Hollywood. He has openly supported Republican candidates, including Donald Trump. Voight has said in interviews that his political stance has affected how some colleagues interact with him. He has also argued that conservative perspectives receive less support in the industry.
Similarly, actor James Woods has claimed he was effectively “blacklisted” after voicing conservative opinions on social media. Actress Gina Carano drew attention after she was fired from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian for voicing some of her own conservative views.
Ongoing Debate Over Public Expression
The situation adds to a broader discussion about how celebrities express political beliefs. Some choose to speak openly, while others keep their views private. The decision often shapes how audiences and peers respond.
Offerman’s remarks underline the tension between personal expression and professional dynamics. While he disagreed with Quaid’s approach, he also acknowledged his colleague’s talent and experience. But at the same time he stated that the actor was “crazy” for voicing his own beliefs. That goes to show that there’s only one acceptable political leaning in Hollywood and anyone who strays from it is considered persona non grata.

As public discourse continues to intersect with entertainment, similar situations may arise. Actors and other public figures remain under scrutiny for both their work and their personal views.
