It’s difficult to believe but both Ms. Marvel and Obi-Wan Kenobi are still generating less online searches than Stranger Things. What makes this so peculiar is that today is the launch date for Ms. Marvel and Stranger Things has now been out for nearly three weeks. We recently saw that Stranger Things outperformed Kenobi in terms of smart television viewers in North America by about 1.5 million screens. Is it still outperforming both Kenobi AND Ms. Marvel this far out from its content-release? Important to note is that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ms. Marvel are episodic with weekly content drops; Stranger Things only has two content releases with the next not due out until July.
It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out in terms of Nielsen ratings in the coming weeks. If Kenobi’s interest levels are down to 33% of their debut-day marks according to Google search data (and they are), and Ms. Marvel is only barely beating Kenobi currently, it seems to indicate that Ms. Marvel is also not a huge ratings bonanza Disney might want to see.
We’ll have to wait to see what happens, but keep this on your radar in the continuing oddity of Disney+ subscribers going up while Disney+ content engagement seemingly goes down.

1) Netflix has more subscribers and a different business model than D+. Seems natural that the biggest show on the biggest streaming platform will generate more longlasting engagement and views & hours watched.
2) Why would it be surprising that Ms. Marvel is less popular on debut than Stranger Things, an already well established show and Netflix’s hottest property? This is a failed character in the comics, and you’ve pointed out several times how Marvel shows have been in decline.
3) What predictions have you or someone else made using Google Trends that later came true?
Thanks.
4) how much are you being paid to be captain woke-defender? ?
Asking questions are free.
By the way, not everything you don’t like is woke. Even the Ms. Marvel show isn’t woke.
I suspect he works for Disney or is Disney adjacent since he is declaring a show that people have seen one episode at most is not woke.
Well, WDWPro can feel free to email me for an interview if he wants to vet me.
Joking aside, based on the first episode, no, it doesn’t look like it is. And that’s taking into account that both Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel in the comics are super-woke. Over 10 years of MCU demonstrate you can make great movies without being 100% faithful to the comics.
1) Disney has 38 million North America subscribers compared to Netflix 71 million US subscribers.
Nielsen provides US data, and Disney provides North America. So let’s say Disney has about half the US subscribers.
If half then 1.5 more hours watch looks good because we should expect 2 times.
Except, Stranger Things is on season 4 and the show isn’t for everyone. Many should drop out by season 4. Also, this assumes Stranger Things has a following greater than Star Wars.
Obi-wan is on the same interest level as Boba Fett and Darth Vader. Disney reduced the interest in Star Wars to below Stranger Things.
The whole point of the article is the shock that Disney harmed their intellectual property. Star Wars should drive new subscriptions and everyone should watch these shows.
I agree with this, but it’s also confirming something we already knew: the Star Wars franchise has been damaged. When you couple this with the unfair coverage I’ve been seeing of Obi-Wan, it’s clear there is bias at play that a story like is feeds into, and that’s what’s upsetting.
The original search ratings came true by Nielsen ratings. Search ratings seem like an indicator of some sort.
Probably just JakeTepper under a different name. Strange. Don’t know what the story is with JakeTepper, but saw he was complaining of his posts being deleted. But there’s always two sides to a story.
Doubtful. Our site admin had to ban IP addresses because a certain someone generated a significant number of fake accounts after three strikes of making inappropriate attacks on writers and commenters. We’ll let almost anything fly, but language that can jeopardize our standing on Google News, as well as personal insults towards individuals unrelated to the topic, is out of bounds. To give you an idea of how rarely this site’s owners and moderators will censor real comments (the site receives dozens or hundreds of spam messages per day from bots you’ll never see), there’s only ever been one other person moderated in the entire existence of this site. We take open discourse seriously.
Thanks WDWPro. Can confirm I’m not JakeTepper. Could be that he posted a comment but it didn’t appear after page reload. That’s happened to me as well, but refreshing again shows the comment posted.
Is it possible to see how many Google adds Disney and Netflix are buying for these shows. I know I have been hammered with Obiwan adds on YouTube. Something like 20 total and 50% of the adds I have seen. I have not seen a single Stranger Things add. That could just be my profile affecting it. It might be interesting to compare the ratings with their add spend. ie which vendor is more desperate for a success.
