Fans of voice acting have reason to anticipate the upcoming live-action remake of 2002’s Lilo & Stitch. Disinsider reported that, though they could not confirm with 100% certainty, Kevin Michael Richardson is likely to return as the voice actor for Captain Gantu in the upcoming 2025 release.
Disney’s live action remake strategy has historically been a success for the studio, but returns have diminished recently. Whether that be changing audience consumption habits, remake fatigue, or casting missteps is going to be the subject of speculation for some time. It seems that for some key roles, Lilo & Stitch (2025) is avoiding that last problem. Since the original movie is 23 years old, many of the cast members are not available to reprise their original roles. David Ogden Stiers passed away in 2018 from bladder cancer and the actors for Lilo (Daveigh Chase), Nani (Tia Carrere), and David (Jason Scott) have aged out of their original roles.

From the trailer we’ve seen that Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen will play Jumba and Pleakley (respectively) in their holographic human forms as well as voice the characters throughout. Courtney B Vance will replace Ving Rhames as Agent Cobra Bubbles. By process of elimination that really only leaves two main characters who could reasonably be played by their original actors: Chris Sanders, who created the character of Stich, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Gantu.
Captain Gantu is a towering, shark-like alien who serves as a high-ranking officer in the Galactic Federation in Lilo & Stitch.

Initially tasked with capturing the rogue genetic experiment Stitch (also known as Experiment 626), Gantu is portrayed as rigid, authoritative, and often short-tempered. Despite his strength and advanced weaponry, his inability to adapt and his arrogance often lead to failure, especially when faced with Stitch’s unpredictable behavior.
After his repeated failures, Gantu is eventually fired from his post and becomes a recurring antagonist in the Lilo & Stitch series, seeking revenge and working with other villains to capture experiments for his own gain.

From what we’ve seen it seems that this remake is being made with nods to the original, from the Elvis tune in the trailer, to the cast inclusions (found on imdb.com) of both original cast members Tia Carrere and Jason Scott in new roles.
You may not know Kevin Michael Richardson by name, or even by sight, but you’ve almost certainly heard his voice.

If you’ve watched cartoon series you’ve heard him in Animanics, Star Wars, Invader Zim, Clifford the Big Red Dog, The Batman… On the big screen, obviously as Gantu in Lilo & Stitch, but also Princess and the Frog, Star Trek into Darkness, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and more. The man has over 600 credits to his name.
