Night City is headed for the big screen. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie based on CD Projekt Red’s open-world role-playing game, with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to produce alongside the Polish studio, which holds the franchise rights.

Justin Kroll broke the news as an exclusive at Deadline on October 8, 2026, and Variety and TheWrap soon confirmed it. Beyond confirmation of the studio, the producer, and CD Projekt Red’s role, nothing else has been announced. There’s no director, writer, cast, plot, production start, or release date.

CD Projekt Red Calls Paramount a Future Partner

CD Projekt Red hasn’t issued a formal press release, but joint chief executive Michał Nowakowski addressed the report directly. “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise,” he wrote in a post on X. He added that the studio plans to share more details “at the appropriate time.”

The “future partner” phrasing suggests the deal is still at the development stage rather than a project with a finished script. It also confirms that the studio behind the game is on board, which isn’t a given with video game adaptations, and serving as a producer gives CD Projekt Red a seat at the table as the story takes shape.

Di Bonaventura is one of Paramount’s most reliable franchise producers. He’s been the producing force behind the Transformers films for nearly two decades and is staying with that series as Steven Spielberg takes a bigger creative role under Skydance.

Adding this project to his slate puts another large, effects-heavy world in familiar hands.

What the Movie Has to Work With

The game is set in Night City, a sprawling metropolis in California within the dystopian Cyberpunk universe, where megacorporations hold enormous power and cybernetic implants are part of everyday life. Players control V, a mercenary who ends up carrying a “biochip” holding a digital copy of rock star and rebel Johnny Silverhand. As Silverhand’s personality starts overwriting V’s own, the two have to work together to separate and save V’s life, which puts them on a collision course with the Arasaka Corporation, the de facto ruler of the city.

Silverhand is played in the game by Keanu Reeves, and that’s the first question fans will ask. Nobody has said whether Reeves is involved with the movie, and it’s not yet known whether the film will follow V and Silverhand or tell a new story in the same setting. Deadline describes the project as a film “set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe,” which leaves room for either.

The audience is already there. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide since its December 2020 release, and the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold another 15 million. That’s a remarkable recovery for a game that launched after several delays and with widespread performance problems, especially on older consoles, before years of patches and the expansion won players back.

The franchise has also already proven it can work on screen. Netflix’s 2022 anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, made by Studio Trigger, was a hit with fans and drove a new wave of players back to the game. A live-action film is a much bigger and more expensive bet, but it’s not starting from zero.

Paramount Doubles Down on Video Games

The Cyberpunk 2077 movie joins a growing list of game adaptations at Paramount. The studio is co-producing Street Fighter with Legendary, and that film opens in theaters on October 16. It’s also developing a Call of Duty movie with Peter Berg directing from a script he co-wrote with Taylor Sheridan.

The timing makes sense. Game adaptations have turned from a punchline into one of Hollywood’s steadier bets. The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office in 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s was a major theatrical hit that same year, and HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout have been major streaming successes.

Most of those hits were aimed at families or built on a strong central story. The game is a mature, adult-skewing property, and its appeal comes as much from player choice and atmosphere as from a fixed plot. Turning that into two hours of film is the real challenge for whoever Paramount hires to write and direct it. Until CD Projekt Red shares more “at the appropriate time,” that remains the biggest open question.
