Director Zach Cregger, known for his breakout horror hit Barbarian, recently revealed that his upcoming movie Weapons underwent a complete overhaul in casting due to issues stemming from Pedro Pascal in the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

The film, which centers on a chilling mystery in a small Pennsylvania town where 17 children mysteriously vanish from an elementary school, was originally set to feature a star-studded lineup including Pascal in yet another Hollywood leading role.

Cregger opened up about the production challenges in a candid interview, explaining how the strikes created a ripple effect that ultimately led to Pascal’s departure.

“I had a whole different cast for this movie,” he admitted. “And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal’s schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie.”

He emphasized that such setbacks are part of the industry’s nature, adding, ““This is what happens, right? The strikes delayed us, and then when you delay, people’s schedules get conflicts, and then you’re back at square one. I bear no ill will towards anybody. We just kept getting delayed and delayed. It’s like a domino effect. So I had to start over again.”

Pascal, who has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, was initially slated to portray a distraught father searching for his missing child. His exit was prompted by a packed 2025 slate, which includes roles in A24’s romantic drama Materialists alongside Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, the indie Western Eddington, and his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Had he stayed on board, Weapons would have marked his fourth major theatrical release in the summer of 2025 alone, highlighting what some industry observers attribute to overexposure or overcasting.

The Weapons recasting process wasn’t limited to Pedro Pascal. Cregger confirmed that most of the original ensemble had to be replaced.

Early announcements had teased a cast featuring Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Eternals), Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Wolfs), and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World).

In the end, only Abrams remained, sticking with the project through the turmoil.

“He hung tough with me,” Cregger said of Abrams. “That’s my dude right there.”

Abrams, who plays a drug-addicted town resident named James, shared his enthusiasm.

“I’d seen Barbarian with a friend,” he said. “I remember when it cut to Justin Long in the car, I just knew I loved whoever made that movie. I was able to get in contact with Zach, and then it turned out he was making something. He thought I was a good fit for it, potentially. … I loved the part and I didn’t wanna let it go. So I just really held on because I really wanted to do it.”

Josh Brolin, another MCU veteran known for his role as Thanos, stepped in to fill Pascal’s shoes as the grieving father. This substitution has sparked discussions among fans and critics about how the film’s tone and dynamics might shift, given Brolin’s gritty intensity compared to Pascal. The revamped cast now promises a fresh take on the multi-layered horror epic, described as tonally akin to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia but steeped in supernatural dread.

Production on Weapons finally wrapped after the extensive changes, and the film is gearing up for its theatrical release on August 8, 2025, courtesy of New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Cregger’s experience underscores broader issues in the industry, where strikes not only halt filming but also exacerbate the challenges of coordinating A-list talent in an era of franchise dominance and streaming wars.

Despite the Pedro Pascal-related hurdles, anticipation for Weapons remains high, building on Barbarian’s surprise success. Whether the recast elevates or alters the film’s impact, it serves as a reminder of the fragile balance between creative vision and logistical realities in modern moviemaking.
