Prime Video announced they greenlit a new series based on the Books of Samuel titled House of David.

The project is part of a deal that Prime Video has struck with a newly formed studio called Wonder Project, which is led by producer Jon Erwin and former Netflix and YouTube executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten. One of the company’s largest investors is The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins.

The logline for the series states, “House of David follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king. As Saul’s fury grows, David navigates love, violence and politics in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. Two kings. One Kingdom. The outcome is war.”

Amazon MGM Studios head of TV Vernon Sanders said the stories that Wonder Project pitched to him, moved him, “When we met with Jon, Kelly and Dallas, their clear and passionate vision for The Wonder Project and their ambition to nurture universal stories of love, triumph and spirituality moved us.”

He added, “We are very excited about the scope, scale and storytelling involved with House of David and look forward to sharing this epic and many others with our global Prime Video customers.”

For her part, Hoogstraten said, “Our goal at The Wonder Project is to tell stories that restore faith in things worth believing in, and to do this at scale.”

“We’ve been blown away by Amazon’s commitment to help us do this — both through the significant resources they are dedicating and their trust in us to tell these stories authentically to our audience,” she added.

The series is being executive produced by Erwin alongside Chad Oaks, Mike Frislev, Jonathan Walker, and Justin Rosenblatt.

Alongside Prime Video and the Wonder Project, it is also being produced by Nomadic Pictures and Argonauts as well as Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate Television.

This move comes after the success of Angel Studios’ original The Chosen as well as other faith-focused stories such as Mark Wahlberg’s Father Stu. Sony Pictures released Father Stu back in 2022 and the movie grossed $21.7 million after only spending $4 million on the film’s production.

When the film debuted on Netflix, it was the third most watched English-language film on the streaming service and racked up 13.7 million hours viewed. In its second week, it remained in the top 10 and racked up another 5.4 million hours
