The console wars aren’t over, but they’re certainly one-sided. According to Sony’s latest earnings report, PlayStation 5 (PS5) sales have reached 84.2 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2025 — surpassing every Xbox system Microsoft has ever released.
Even with price hikes, economic uncertainty, and fierce competition, Sony’s juggernaut continues to roll forward while Xbox faces the most lopsided generation gap in modern gaming history.

This figure, confirmed in Sony’s Q2 FY2025 financials, places the PS5 ahead of the Xbox 360’s final official tally of 84 million units (last reported by Microsoft in 2014). That makes the PS5 one of Sony’s fastest-selling consoles ever (it still doesn’t measure up to the PS2) — and easily the most dominant system of its generation.
Console War Casualty: Xbox’s Quiet Decline
The most telling part of the story isn’t Sony’s victory — it’s Microsoft’s silence. Xbox has stopped publicly releasing hardware sales numbers and hasn’t for years now. Industry trackers from Aldora Intelligence via the Wall Street Journal put Xbox Series X|S at 28.3 million units as of Sept. 2024 with a report in February 2025 upping that number to 30 million.

It’s a staggering gap — especially when you remember that Xbox once went toe-to-toe with PlayStation during the 360 era. But that was a long time ago. Microsoft’s modern strategy has pivoted away from console hardware toward subscription services like Game Pass and cloud gaming. The problem is that those services haven’t replaced the cultural impact of owning a box under the TV that fans can rally around.
Sony’s Strategy Keeps Winning
While Microsoft talks about ecosystems and services, Sony keeps doing what gamers actually care about — selling great hardware and making blockbuster exclusives.

Even more impressive? Sony managed this while raising the PS5 retail sales price to $550, compared to the PS4’s $300 tag at the same point in its lifespan. Despite that, demand remains sky-high, and the company has labeled the PS5 generation its most financially successful era ever.
In Sony’s own financial slides, the Game & Network Services division has generated more revenue with each successive generation since the PS1 — a streak that now continues well into the PS5 era.
A Victory 10 Years in the Making
IGN’s report points out a fair caveat: the Xbox 360 may have sold a few more units after Microsoft’s final update before being discontinued in 2016. But even allowing for that margin, the PS5 is now officially ahead of every Xbox console ever produced — and it’s only halfway through its lifespan. With a rumored PlayStation 6 on the horizon and more first-party exclusives yet to launch, Sony’s momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s next moves remain uncertain. Will it double down on cloud gaming? Go fully third-party? Or simply accept a future where Xbox hardware is a niche product rather than a mass-market competitor? For now, Sony’s dominance in hardware sales has made the outcome of this generation’s console war clear.

That’s pretty sad because the PS5 itself is an awful product.
The PS5 is ok in my opinion, but the lineup of games is the worst of any console generation ever.

As a Playstation player since the PS1 era, I have to say the only reason the PS5 is so big, is because Microsoft didn’t even try to compete in this generation. Sonys lineup in this generation SUCKS! Aside from 1 or 2 great games it’s just cultural marxism propaganda and unimaginative live service trash, which never even was alive in the first place. It’s the worst playstation Generation ever! Microsoft could have easily won this generation. But they somehow chose to suck even more than Sony. I can’t wrap my head arround this. How they threw away an easy win. This must be some kind of plan for microsoft and Sony to get away from being console manufacturers. Else I couldn’t explain how a person capable of rational thinking would sabotage themselves in this way.
