Universal Studios must be feeling very positive about Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The now-dormant Shrek franchise could use a pick-me-up, especially as Universal had appeared to ditch everyone associated with the Ogre for a full-force push into Despicable Me characters. However, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is scheduled for a September theater-only release that has some industry watchers scratching their heads. Although September is often a graveyard time at movie theaters, there’s no reason Universal couldn’t just make this a direct-to-streaming affair. Yet they’re going all in with a theatrical exclusive launch for Antonio Banderas’ talking feline. Have executives seen the film and decided it really could make a splash?
