A peculiar decision surrounding child accounts on Disney+ and a new feature-length movie has families wondering what’s going on.
This is an initial report. Changes can and do happen on streaming platforms all the time. As of publication, we believe this information to be correct.
Lightyear opened and closed at the box office with a failed theatrical run. Now, the movie is on Disney+ but a very peculiar thing has happened. For whatever reason, and I don’t pretend to know what is going on with this one, it seems that children accounts for the platform are unable to access Lightyear OR it is at least hidden in some way. A very helpful reader sent us this information which was then verified by one of our admins.
One of the curious things about this issue is whether this is an oversight or purposeful. If this is purposeful, for what reason? While I understand that two mommies being pregnant could cause major questions for kiddos, I don’t see a clear-cut way to ding the movie based on a rating. It seems to me that it’s an ideological issue rather than an issue of obsenity or inappropriateness. In other words, some families will greatly enjoy what is in Lightyear and what it is about — other families may find it very problematic.
What's that? You can now see your favorite new duo Buzz and Sox whenever you want?! It's true! 🚀

So far there’s no statement out of Disney or Pixar as to why Lightyear seems unavailable for children accounts on Disney+. Should they release a statement or change the availability, we will update this article.

I can only read the tea leaves on this one and I’m choosing to take it as a good sign that Disney is trying to avoid antagonizing parents with traditional values… but not in all cases.
Having a kid profile setup this is not surprising. Cars 3 which is rated G is unavailable to children also. The handful of adults at Disney know that Lightyear is not a kids movie, even if the creator’s made it at them.
Why would Cars 3 not be available?
Kids profiles are intended for 7 and under. Lots of stuff is restricted to them. Other examples are the live action remakes like Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Don’t know their exact reasoning, it’s annoying but not uncommon. I always just assumed that a hyper protective adult was screening the D+ kids section since alot of the movies seem to not have a real reason. Unlike Lightyear which has a very obvious reason.

Or it could be because it shows Florida in a positive light and kids shouldn’t be exposed to that?
I’m not surprise. Lightyear is more of an adult movie anyway. I hope that’s the last Pixar movie that is woke. And I hope Elemental is not woke and a better movie than Lightyear.
The new Buzz movie is rated PG, you may have set up your kid’s profile to shows titles that are G or TV-G or below. It has nothing to do with Disney.
When I had Disney+ I don’t recall there being an option to set rating restrictions for children. I know this option exists on other platforms like HBO Max.
All three if my kids profile features Lightyear as soon as it loads. My daughter asked me this morning if she could watch it. I obviously said no.
If Disney were wise, you would allow filters on child profiles and allow parents to eliminate topics they aren’t comfortable with their kids seeing. Wouldn’t be that difficult to add labels to content and then allow parents to screen those labels (like woke) out.
