Robert Redford, one of the most enduring and respected figures in American cinema, has died at the age of 89. According to his publicist Cindi Berger, the actor, director, producer, and activist passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by his family.

Redford’s death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades. From classic leading man roles to award-winning directing and founding the Sundance Film Festival, his influence stretched far beyond the silver screen.

Early Life and Rise to Stardom

Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California. Raised in a working-class family, he attended the University of Colorado before pursuing acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Redford’s early career began on stage and television, but he quickly transitioned to film, gaining notice for his roles in Inside Daisy Clover (1965) and Barefoot in the Park (1967). His breakout came just two years later with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), where his role as the outlaw Sundance Kid cemented his star power.

Box Office Titan of the 1970s

The 1970s proved to be Redford’s golden era. He starred in back-to-back hits that remain Hollywood classics.

  • The Sting (1973), alongside Paul Newman, became one of the decade’s highest-grossing films and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
  • The Way We Were (1973), co-starring Barbra Streisand, remains one of the most beloved romances in film history.
  • All the President’s Men (1976), in which he played journalist Bob Woodward, defined political thrillers for a generation.

With his blond good looks and natural charisma, Redford became the epitome of a Hollywood leading man—yet his range as an actor prevented him from being typecast.

Acclaimed Director

In 1980, Redford made his directorial debut with Ordinary People, a drama about grief and family dysfunction. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and earned Redford the Oscar for Best Director.

He went on to direct A River Runs Through It (1992), which introduced audiences to a young Brad Pitt, and Quiz Show (1994), which received four Oscar nominations. His directorial style emphasized intimate character studies, moral questions, and understated visual storytelling.

Founder of Sundance

While his acting and directing brought him fame, Redford’s greatest legacy may be the creation of the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival in the 1980s. The festival, held annually in Park City, Utah, became the most important showcase for independent filmmaking in the world.

Through Sundance, Redford championed voices outside of mainstream Hollywood, helping launch the careers of Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and many others. His name became synonymous not only with stardom but also with nurturing new generations of filmmakers.

Awards and Recognition

Over his career, Redford received nearly every major honor Hollywood could bestow:

  • Academy Award for Best Director (Ordinary People)
  • Academy Honorary Award (2002) for his contributions to film
  • Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards across acting and directing categories
  • The Presidential Medal of Freedom (2016) from President Barack Obama
  • Kennedy Center Honors (2005)
  • The Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award (1995)

His accolades reflect not only his talent but also his stature as a figure who transformed the film industry.

Personal Life and Family

Redford married twice—first to historian Lola Van Wagenen, with whom he had four children, and later to artist Sibylle Szaggars, his surviving spouse. He endured personal tragedy, including the loss of his infant son, but maintained a private family life away from Hollywood’s spotlight.

The Legacy of Robert Redford

Robert Redford was more than a movie star—he was a cultural institution. As an actor, he defined cool for a generation. As a director, he proved himself a master craftsman. As a philanthropist, he changed the landscape of independent film.

Some Loser

I’ll admit, I’ve never heard of Mr. Redford myself but I hope his remaining family find peace after his passing and may he rest in peace as well.

Vallor

I am surprisingly sad about this event despite the fact Redford wasn’t really a force in the industry for me.

Most of his notable work was before my time but still so impactful the ripples spread out and you’d eventually end up watching almost everything he was in or directed. Especially if your mom was obsessed with him and binged on VHS tapes of his filmography at least once a year while you were growing up.
