Ronda Rousey defeated Gina Carano in 17 seconds via armbar submission Saturday night in the headline bout of Netflix’s major MMA event at the Intuit Dome in California.

The finish came almost immediately after the opening bell as Rousey charged forward, secured a takedown, landed strikes, and transitioned directly into the armbar that defined much of her legendary MMA career. Carano tapped quickly as the crowd erupted. Reuters and multiple MMA outlets reported the official time as 17 seconds.

For longtime MMA fans, it was a shocking but familiar sight.

Rousey built her UFC career by overwhelming opponents in seconds, often ending fights before they could properly begin. And after years away from the sport following back-to-back losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, Rousey appeared completely locked in from the moment she made her walk to the cage.

She entered with a cold intensity that immediately stood out. After the way her first MMA career ended, it was clear Rousey wanted this comeback to look very different.

Ronda Rousey Says Gina Carano Inspired Her MMA Career

Despite the quick finish, the respect between the two fighters was evident after the bout.

According to Reuters and MMA Fighting’s post-fight coverage, Rousey told Ariel Helwani that Carano was “the reason” she got into MMA and referred to her as “my hero” during the post-fight interview.

Those remarks fit the history between the two women. Before Rousey became the face of women’s MMA in the UFC, Carano was widely viewed as the fighter who first brought mainstream attention to women competing in the sport.

Rousey also indicated this was officially the end of her fighting career. Prior to the event, she had already suggested this comeback would be a one-time return before stepping away again to focus on family life.

The performance also served as a major redemption moment for Rousey personally.

For years, critics focused heavily on the brutal losses that ended her UFC run. But on Saturday night, Rousey managed to leave the sport once again with a reminder of exactly why she became one of the most dominant and recognizable fighters in MMA history.

Gina Carano Lost With Grace

Carano, meanwhile, handled the loss with class despite clear disappointment over how fast the fight ended.

Carano lamented the fact that the fight was over before she really had the chance to engage in a meaningful exchange with Rousey.

Even in defeat, however, Carano appeared genuinely happy to have returned to MMA after nearly two decades away from competition.

Leading into the event, Carano revealed she had undergone a dramatic physical transformation while preparing for the fight, losing approximately 100 pounds during training camp.

And while she acknowledged the realities of age and the toll fighting takes physically, Carano did not completely close the door on potentially competing again in the future.

Carano said she had rediscovered her love for mixed martial arts during the process of preparing for the bout and hinted that fans should never completely rule anything out when it comes to her future.

A Massive Moment for Women’s MMA

Even though the fight itself lasted less than 20 seconds, the event carried enormous historical significance for the sport.

Carano helped pave the way for women’s MMA long before it became a centerpiece attraction in major promotions. Rousey then elevated the sport to another level entirely, becoming one of the biggest stars the UFC ever produced.

Their long-awaited clash may not have delivered the dramatic back-and-forth battle many hoped for, but it still created one unforgettable image: Ronda Rousey once again standing victorious after an armbar finish.

And after the difficult conclusion to her original MMA run, that was likely exactly how she wanted her story to end.
