The little girls who were missed by a Sesame Street performer at Sesame Place are now “in isolation” and need their therapy bills covered according to the family’s attorney.
The train has now left the station for any semblance of logic being applied to the situation in which a costumed performer did not hug two children of African descent during a parade at Sesame Place. This is a common, every day occurrence at theme parks around the world, regardless of the ethnicity of children. There is no possible way for a parade performer to ensure that they both see and interact with every single child in a way that will fully satisfy the expectations of every family. That is partially why this has become ridiculously stupid.
There are plenty of additional ways that has reached beyond stupidity and went into a full-on gross moment that should be condemned. I intend to do just that.
Racism is wrong. Treating people poorly because of their ethnicity is a ignorant and poisonous way to live. Likewise, accusing someone of such an act when it is not apparent is vile too. And when a company apologizes and goes out of its way to make amends, choosing to escalate much further is vile as well.
There is currently a Change.org petition to try to force or covertly obtain the identification of the performer who was playing Rosita in the Sesame Place parade. That is so far over the top that it’s hard to believe anyone would accept such a thing without calling out the blatant hatred involved in it. The idea that you would doxx a performer in a theme park parade to condemn them in a mob mentality, making them and their family unsafe, and all over the character not hugging a child… with no evidence as to whether or not this performer hugs other children… it’s despicable. I call out anyone grabbing their torches over such a ridiculous cause and I say that this is mental filth. Sesame Place offered to let the little children have a special meeting with the characters for a lovely time. That was refused. Now the family is saying they will not accept that the performer just missed the kids and a petition is attempting to doxx a minimum wage worker who may be totally innocent. Disgusting.
[The attorney, B’Ivory Lamarr] is also calling for the theme park to pay for the girls’ mental health treatment, as Jodi Brown, pictured, says her daughter is in isolation following the incident. – Lisa Koenigg, Daily Mail
A four-year old doesn’t need therapy for a Muppet missing their attempt at a hug. Did all the other performers ignore them as well? Did the Rosita performer ignore every other child of minority ethnic background? A four-year old doesn’t go into “isolation” for such a thing. This is madness. And calling for a theme park to pay for “mental health treatment” over such a thing is a hustle. It needs to stop. But as long as companies like Sesame Place and Sesame Street play along with this sort of thing, it will only embolden people to attempt more of it.
There are truly despicable acts in this world. Many of our goods come from industrialized slavery in China. There is a vast network of organ harvesting in eastern Asia. Some nations are still under dictatorial rule and economic collapse. A war is happening in Europe between Ukraine and Russia. Those things are categorically different than two little girls being missed by a single Muppet in a theme park parade. We should treat people who can’t understand those categorical differences, and the necessitated responses for those categories, as the fools they are. Racism is evil. Using racism to take advantage and harm workers is also evil. And we’ll call it out.
Everyone involved is going to feel really, really stupid if the performer turns out to be African American or if there is video of the performer greeting minority children all along the parade route. But even still, everyone involved should already feel quite stupid.
Like another writer said here yesterday, everyone in this situation needs to be kind. The complete opposite is happening.
